Ignore this post. I figured it out and I am mentally slow today. lol

Just a random thought for Geir. In HG, it lists specific effects you can add (Advantages) at higher TLs, but it doesn't allow you to build a Prototype J-6 Drive at TL-14. Is this how it is supposed to work or is this a glitch? Or are different rules supposed to be used?

Pardon? WBH and CRB default rules only allow J-6 at TL-15. HG overrides ruleset that allows emergence of higher level tech to start one or two tech levels earlier.
That you can build a prototype J-6 at TL 13 by giving it two disadvantages and paying out the wazzoo for it. Or one disadvantage at TL 14, and a payment slightly less painful for any affected wazzoos.
Yeah. Exclusive to Beta Testers and the very rich?

I don't mind having different TLs for different technologies, I think it adds to the setting more than it detracts.

What I dislike is the prototype and experimental way of doing things.

A nuclear power station at TL4? Sure just take two disadvantages. A prototype fusion power plant in a TL7 experimental jump ship? Of course. I'm not saying I dislike it to the point of removal, it makes for some interesting 1950s themed sci fi or steampunk (the atomic powered Nautilus of Hollywood).

I uses stages within the same TL - so the experimental then prototype jump drive are early versions but still TL9.

Who gets to determine the advantages/disadvantages? Think HG says it is the referee. But what if a player or npc was an engineer or scientist, who had contributed a "white paper" on the tech? Could they use that as persuasion, and influence the outcome?

Would be nice to see one more disadvantage at TL-2 to be:
Concept: exists as a concept or idea on paper and not presently available to manufacture. Still needs to be paid for.
One more advantage at TL+2 could be:
Template: Tech is available as a fabricator's template. Able to make two for price of one + raw materials costs.

Whoever designs/buys the item. Whether they choose to use overly large stand in parts like vacuum tubes for transistors or inefficient components that radiate as much energy in the form of waste heat as they additionally need to operate.

I like the way MgT handles TL stage effects in HG, it is a system that lends itself to expansion to more systems and other things like vehicles.
If you ignore the rule that says you cant mix advantages and disadvantages there are all sorts of ways to customise stuff.

Some of those naturally go together, like bulky and easy to repair. As long as the bulk is spreading parts out and making room to swap them easily.
Or Power Hog and High Yield
