If I own Stormbringer 5e...

is there any reason for me to buy the new set?

I haven't seen any comparisons of the two products yet, so I don't know if I should bother buying this book.

From Past experience with Mongoose, if you want as close as you can to "The Real Thing" GET THE BOOK...

I prefer the Mongoose version myself, they did some realy cool stuff with the Pacts. Sorcery is improved too although limited, it's just summoning for the most part in the core book.

I don't know if I'll ever buy RQElric. S5 (& all those releases from Chaosium) are pretty impressive, IMO. I still think that 'Rogue Mistress' is the BEST fantasy campaign ever (& also is as close as you can get to something written by Mike himself as a RPG). & that's quite difficult to top!

So, if I were you, I'd wait for the inevitable comparison revues & then make up my mind.

At least, I believe both of them are compatible, right?

Well, if you are an old school gamer it would probably be best to make up your own mind by playing a game with some group that already has the rules or going to a con to play it.
I found reviews can be misleading. There are truths in everything, but you can never get the full truth until you decide whay you think of it.
Personally though, I am happy with the new rules, but I have no experience with the previous editions.

If you are unfamiliar with MRQ, then download the SRD and players update pdf and decide based on your reaction to it.

If you prefer the Chaosium stuff to MRQ, then you probably are better off saving your money, although the Mongoose books might be good as soucebooks or to "cut& Paste" stuff that you like.

If you someone who prefers MRQ to the Chaosium stuff, then you'll probably want all the Mongoose EC stuff.

Well, it kind of is the Chaosium stuff with loz doing it, isin't it? I know there are differences, but in essence, with someone who worked with chaosium doing it for mongoose, with a few differences, it kind of is a continuation in a way from what chaosium did.

The one advantage right now that I see is that Stormbringer has a much better combat system than MRQ imo. But I wasn't sure that maybe things have been fixed up a bit in the new book.

If that is how you feel about Rogue Mistress, then you'll be interested to
know that Loz Whitaker was involved in writing that solid piece of multiplanar
adventuring. He also wrote Unknown East for Chaosium's Elric!. So, it
might behoove you to at elast thumb through Mongoose's Elric

I'll be buying the entire Elric and Hawkmoon lines, maybe other EC stuff as
well. And then I'll take my complete Chaosium collection, as well as copious
houserules, and mix'n'match to my heart's content

Agreed wholeheartedly, Still not a particularly big fan of the MRQ comabt system, even after the last player notes, our group has tried to persevere but ultimately it just don't feel right (Most of us have played from RQ2 onwards, myself from RQ1).

Also not a big fan of the way Mongoose stretches the content over umpteen books, but I guess these days it ain't just Mongoose doing that.

Stretching content over multiple books dates back to 1974 at least. "Men and Magic", "Monsters and Treasure", "The Underworld and Wilderness Adventures". These were followed in short order by "Greyhawk", "Blackmoor", "Eldritch Wizardry", "Gods, Demigods and Heroes" and "Swords and Spells".

As for not liking core game mechanics, I found Elric!/SB5 magic to be too focused on spells, and mutant demon creation for my tastes.

I would prefer that RQ had taken to using the King Arthur Pendragon BRP derived mechanics, but as they stand they do not seem too bad.

MRQ Elric does include rules for begining Sorcery (demon, elemental and Beast Lord summoning and automotaton construction) as well as Dreamthieving and Cults.


Too be honest if you are happy with SB5 you could probably wait for the supplements without missing out on too much content. Buying the book does have the advantage of sending Mongoose the economic signal that the game is viable.
