Ideas for a Retinue Based Game?

I'm feeling stumped--I want to base my campaign at least the Zamoran phase of it around my pcs being in the retinue of a Corinthian patrician who is sent as a trade envoy. However I can't think of anything for adventures off the top of my head. The only thing coming to mind was the idea of a sort of cross between Marco Polo and a Brother's Grimm style story--where basically the envoy is called upon to do things or get involved in intrigues that the pcs ultimately have to do adventures in order to deal with. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
 
have them do some spying, blackmailing, extortion and elimination on enemy merchants and smugglers. eg do things like raid certain caravans to stop a certain product from reaching the city while allowing their masters and a couple of others to get the product through to fix the prices of said product etc.
 
The trade envoy 'cover' is a staple one of spy fiction (James Bond's cover was he worked for Universal Exports). So, a lot of spy fiction plots could easily be adapted (change the names, technology etc).

Some ideas:
The horses of some Corinthian cavalry units near to the border are being poisoned in some way. The horses feed comes via a trade deal with a Zamoran town across the border. The trade envoy (and the PC's) are sent to investigate what is going on; who is behind it and is it a prelude to something bigger (invasion?)

Children of high-ranking families are being kidnapped, but are then being found sometime later, alive and unharmed. Yet it becomes apparent that they are 'changed' in some way. The PC's need to find out what's happening; possibly setting up someone as a decoy/plant? (and at what risk to them?)

A 'factory' (can't think of a better term) is producing 'something'. Loads of raw materials go in; nothing seems to come out. Again; under cover of a trade mission; the PC's need to investigate. Maybe it is making the Hyborian equivilant of Greek Fire; this would be a major weapon in warfare. Or perhaps poison gas, like chlorine, made into crystals that dissolve on contact with air (you've got to be a bit inventive with the science here!)

Although it is nice to have available to everyone, have you ever considered submitting it to S&P? I have used your generator many, many times...

Anyway, looking forward to the revision.

Thanks very much for the ideas. I think that the secret intelligence thing makes sense--it might also then explain why the rather devious court of Tiridates might weave webs around the envoy too. There could be I guess any number of reasons why some of the events you mention are happening.

The players will include a scholar, a borderer and a soldier so the ideas you have make especial sense for them I think. Ultimately I want Shadizar used as a base of operations but for a lot of the adventures to take place in other places--in the mountains or desert for instance.
