How do you build your gang?

GMAN

Mongoose
I was putting together my Cursed Earth gang the other day, as i finally finished painting them :D I had in mind what i wanted in. Then found that after i had kitting out my Mutant Psi hero to lead the gang, i didn't have as many points left as i thought.

So how do everyone else build there gang? Do you have one powerful hero with the rest of the gang being less equiped minions, a couple of reasonably equiped heros with the rest being minions or do you go with a swarm of lower equiped minions with maybe a hero?

I try to field two or three heross. Without breaking out the HS/2 suits, I'm not convinced you can make people tough enough to take on large numbers of weaker opponents..

+1 Agility for a hero and some cover is good enough to make them tough without costing the earth, whereas high level heroes rapidly bankrupt you.

Mid-level kit is generally enough - I tend to find spit guns are a good buy; gunfire is very effective so (a) he who shoots first generally wins and (b) I've never felt any particular need to take melee gear.

I've never had to deal with sky surfers or judges on lawmasters, though - it could be that the very fast opponents make melee much more workable, but I'd have thought that even then a tight-ish knot of guys with spit guns with a few on alert status would probably keep you safe.

I think its fun to vary it a bit. I have tried a gang of punks with minimal gear and a 'gang' of one high powered individual. I guess each has advantages and half the fun is using the terrain and circumstances to best augment the gang's own strengths.

A balance is probably best: a few well equipped models allowing some tactical variability should give anybody a run for their money - just sometimes its not as much fun as trying to dash 25 juves with knives across a street!

Well right now Im treating my two kids like rookies, with me as their senior Judge. I am also running the other side, whether it be muties "orks" , gangers, citidef, or just civs gone mob. Our models go to about 500pts but i only send against 400 or so.

Normally I try to have an enemy hero for 200 points.

I think I'm going to follow the formula from another game (that was pretty strongly influenced by JD) and build the starter gangs around a single hero, a backbone of reasonably solid troopers and one or two juves for sheer cannon fodder. If the JD game for some reason takes on in our group (doubtfull as there are so many games and so little time) then everybody can add variety as they please.

We are currently waiting for the Zombie mistress and Citi-Def before we start out campaign so i've just been playing around with the lists, so far i've found Judges easy to create, there's not much leeway with there starting force. Street Gangs seem to be very flexible as far as a good all round gang, i've been able to make a nice mix of heros and minions that i found suitable, in fact, once the punk and juve minis have been released, they may even be the gang i pick.

I've found Apes to be the most customisable, I like a hero or two of Gorillas and Orangutan (to develop into a weapons specialist) and then plenty of cheap chimp minions.

As for Fatties i went with just three heros (as thats how many minis i have :P) with decent weapons, you cna have a little leeway with there armour as they are tough enough to survive the initial brawls.

As for Cursed Earth gangs, i found i was so tempted to make my leader mutant a Psi, with 2 additional hits, decent armour and a double barrell stump gun (my weapon of choice  ) That i hardly had any points for anything else...Back to the drawing board for these for now. I'm determined to make a list im happy with just because they are so far the best minis i've painted :D

I generally make lists for the gangs i have minis for (i like seeing how they look in person), so as soon as i make my next order for some sky surfers i'll have a good play about with that list and see how they feel.
