Honor Harrington - Runequest Ruleset

Banded Mongoose
..Or the RCN series by David Drake.

Both these universes lend themselves to gritty action, quick death, and heroism on a grand scale. You would have a large fanbase of readers to pull from and I understand David Weber was shopping the HH to possibly put it into a miniseries on SciFi.

A Honor Harrington RPG is already in playtest, by Ad Astra Games. I don't know how far along they are, and their forums appear to be down today so I can't give you references, but AFAIK that ship has sailed.

Don't know what RCN is, but I doubt Ad Astra is looking at it; they made Saganami Island Tactical Simulator for HH spaceship combat, and I'd imagine their RPG is an outgrowth of that effort. I don't see them becoming a RPG-centered company.

I'll have to file that away to check out later.

The RCN refers to the Lt. Leary books. If you liked HH you would probably like the RCN series as well. Baen has a free library where you could download the first book or two in the series free of charge.

The styles of ship combat would be fairly similar but the FTL travel is a bit different. Drake uses almost exclusively kinetic energy to deal damage where Weber allows for the atmospheric use of energy weapons. Both universes lend themselves to high adventure.

Another company is already hard at work on an Honor Harrington RPG. And according to them David Weber is not really going to let any RPG come out before he finishes the "Entire" series.

Ad Astra's Honor Harrington RPG is in playtest, but you have to jump through hoops to get on the list and essentially buy the book months in advance before you get to see the rules.

As such, most of the details are secret.

What we do know is that it will be based on the d6 system originally developed by West End games. As such, it will in some way resemble the old Star Wars RPG. I've seen a character sheet for the Honor Harrington RPG and it looks pretty well done overall.

with the fact that the co thats doing the HH game wont come out till Webber is done with the series means itll never come out since David webber has not stated anywhere that the series is even close to being finished, yes being a fan of the series and owning all the books + the first in the Shadow of Saganami series minus the 4 Short story books and Crown of Slaves... he should end it soon because i dont know how much more crap he can put Honor trough without all out killing her character which i dont see him doing, so ill belive this game when i see it...

Yes, but D W will not let anyone mess around in his creation until he is finished with it. Over on the Baen Bar there are little hints floating around there that D W will end the series eventually. There is a lot of speculation about how this will occur. There is a rumor over there that the HH universe will end in flames of war that'll destroy every government and nation in the series. I"m not sure how true it is, but it quietly talked about once in awhile.

it may be talked about, but i don't think he is gona end it that way, I know if he does he will anoy all or the majority of his fans. remember he has other series of books in that same universe... Shadow of Saganami <book 1 out, book 2 in the process> and Crown of Slaves <book 1 out long time, book 2 in progress> and if i where a writer i wouldnt want anyone to touch my universe untill im ready... but as a fan i would love to see an RPG based off it... and I want a tree cat already...

but if you loved that series you should try his new one... Off Armageddon Reef, great first book...

That is the rumor on the Board where he post any snippets. And personally I think he could quite easily do that to his universe. Because I think the end is coming one way or another in the next five or 6 years. He is working on Off Armageddon Reef sequels. They have a list of what he's going to publish for Baen over the next few years posted on the boards.

What kills me is that he doesn't want anyone screwing around with the honorverse and then he commissions a miniseries where he doesn't have full control over the final product.

I'm hoping they get someone who can actually act to play Honor. Maybe Claudia Black (though she's not an amazonian tall asian) or Michell Yeoh (Who isn't super-tall, either but is a great actress and a beautiful asian).

Either one is capable of being convincing when they open a can of Whoop-A**.

actualy thats not as uncommon as you think, the majority of movies/TV shows that are based off of books the writer has nothing to do with or have a say in. most times the writer takes the money and walks away, from friends who are writers and other articles from writers most say when they give you money to make a TV show or movie.. its not your responsibility you just take there money and put it in the bank.. and move on...

and as much as i like Claudia or Yeoh, I wouldn't want either one in the roll neither of them are tall enough nor do they have the proper look for honor, id say go with a new actress to play the part someone no one has heard of.. i realy don't want an established actress for the part. I know its gona be hard to find one thats almost perfect look wise but if they dont the character is changed too much.. her looks are just as important as her aditute.

My choice for Honor was the main female lead from the Matrix! She has that right facial features described about Honor in the novels. And she is tall to boot. It's going to be very hard to fill that roll. And since the first movie that they'll be doing for Honor will start off with "The Honor of the Queen." I suppose the people working on the movie might feel its a better jumping on point for those who don't know about HH. Will just have to keep our eyes and ears open for changes.

Karry Ann Moss you mean, im sorry she realy does not have the range of acting talent to pull Honor Off, yes she may be tall but come on she realy cant act.

personally i'm against starting at Honor of the Queen, if you are gonna do Honor you really need to start at the beginning and that would be Basilisk Station, too much happens there that leads into the other books to just ignore it.. Yes i know its not the most exciting but it is the most important background wise, especially why her crew are so loyal to her and would follow her into the bowls of hell if she asked them.. and she had many many times..

I hate to tell you this but the first movie is going to be that one. They have been working on a script for awhile. They are skipping On Basilisk Station for the first movie. That is already pretty well known.

I know, I still think its a stupid decision on there part.. as i said in my previous post, too much happens in the first book for them to ignore it.. but thats not my decision and most likely they will screw it up like they did with the movie adaption of Eragon... but we shal see

I know what you mean Cartmag! I know on the baen book boards people have suggested using anime for "Shadows of Saginami". And supposedly an Anime company is working "Mutineer's Moon".

an Anime company has been working on Mutineers for a good 5-6 years already, they have a sight for it but nothing is there anymore I think it was scraped ages ago, but that was a great series. even tho the third book is just well OK...

Actually from last year that particular company has decided to reduce it to a mini series instead of a full blown series. And that company I believe is ADV. And they are actually working on it again. So we have to be patient.
