Help me decide on a race to play.

Thanks everyone that has been helping me with the many questions I have had about the rules.

I am trying to decide on a race to play. I have read the ship index on most of the races. I think I am leaning towards the narn or the vree. I have semi thoughts about the minbari, but not sure as there is no index.

When I play games I am usually a thinker. I will not usually just charge right in. I guess some people would call it turtling, but for me its not that. I usually overthink things which can be bad unto itself.

I like to usually react to what someone has done instead of act. So in essence I am kind of turtling, but I will move stuff up. I don't forever stay in the background. I usually like playing something that is challenging to play, and may not win very often but when you win its a reward unto itself. I dont care about winning games, and I am not to competitive, but I like something that takes a while to learn. Then when I figure out how to play a game, or learn how something works thats the best reward i can have.

As I have no experience at playing I am not sure what race fits this bill.

Unrelated to the topic but where does everyone get there bases from?

i would say if you want to sit back and react, vree are very good with their turreted arcs and some good range weapons, narn are a poor choice as they dont excel at ranged fire until the top 2 priorities. Minbari would also be good as they have good ranged beams and their stealth is more effective at range. i would avoid shadows, earth (unless you like missiles) and centauri

If you're playing to have fun, heck, just play different games with different races and see what happens.

I prefer playing as the underdogs so Narn and League are fun to goof around with.
Beating Centauri with Narn is always fun :)

Vree sound like a good choice for you - flexible but with powerful and good range.

@basaint - it may be fun - but so unlikely as to be nothing more than a story told to Narn children by their enslaved parents

Really off topic. I forgot to ask if the Vorlon destroyer and transport are the same size? My brother wants to play Vorlon, and I want to have ships semi to scale so I am thinking about picking up the FA transports and then picking up the wars destroyer, and also pciking up a wars light cruiser. I am not sure what the scale is from the Destroyer to the transport tho? Are they supposed to be around the same size at 131 meters?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The Vree fleet looks really noob friendly so I guess I will buy them and paint them up and play. I was trying to find their sizes and all I can find is that the xill is at 500 meters. I am not sure how I can mix the fa to wars scales.

I was thinking about the Narn because they have the Dag Kar,G'Karith, and Var' Nic for range.

Anyways does anyone have an extra Xonn,or Z' Takk for sale?

The transport and destroyer have a somewhat changeable scale.

Essentially the destroyer is the transport with folded wings. AoG produced them as the same size and Mongoose initially followed suit. However, Mongoose decided to rescale the transport to Fleet Action size, making the transport significantly smaller.

Personally, I use FA transports, FA destroyers as Frigates, and Large Scale transports and destoyers as Destroyers.

There is nothing on screen to show any size difference, as far as I know.

@boss....PROPAGANDA I say.... :)

If you want to get the bang for your buck, do FA scale for most low level ships and then Wars/ActA for the big boys. I have some stuff to help you out plus i picked up some Xonn pieces awhile back and was going to kitbash it back together (but never did).

Xonns are hard to come by so i used this as a proxy and its a tad cheaper:

West Virginia. You know the state where we all run around in long john's all day long lol. All joking aside it is the state above Virginia, and I will send you a pm. I am actually at the top part between Ohio and Pa.

If I were trying to write a brief summary of the Narn, it would probably read something like that. Especially the bit about not winning often so it's more rewarding when you do.

Narn start off with long range beams from their big ships and energy mines from their Dag'Kars, then their smaller ships close in for more of the same on a smaller scale. There are two opposing views of the G'Quan, which with its variants makes up the entire Narn choice at Battle level. Some people regard it as little more than a self-propelled target, others (including myself) have used it successfully. (One of my main fleets is the Army of Light, a mixed fleet introduced in P&P whose Battle level choices are the Avioki, Omega and G'Quan. I have chosen the G'Quan, or more often the G'Tal command variant, in preference to the others on several occasions and it has always served me well.) My best non-prejudiced advice would be to get one or two, try it out, and decide for yourself.

The Army of Light is a superb fleet for a B5 fan, being a mixed bag of most of the ships which appeared on screen. It also fits your style of starting off hanging back, then moving stuff up close - see my guide. Also, once you build up a large AoL fleet, some of the individual races can split off for smaller games in their own right. Earth has more types of ship on screen than anyone else, so there are ship types from Earth than anyone else in the AoL. Half the Vree fleet at low level is variants of the Xorr and Xill, both legal in the AoL, so if your AoL has a decent Vree contingent then you'll also have a Vree Skirmish or Raid fleet. Likewise most of the Drazi fleet is variants of the Sunhawk and Warbird, both included in the AoL.

I would also recommend that you get the Sky Full of Stars counter set. Designed for an earlier version of ACTA, this doesn't include all the ships in the 2nd Ed fleet list, or even all the races, but it does have enough for you to get a feel for various fleets - including Minbari, Narn, Vree and Vorlon. So you can try them out before committing yourself to buying a lot of miniatures.

Miniatures should have bases included. Now that Mongoose are back in the miniatures business for the newer incarnation of ACTA, they're selling spare bases as well, which are the same as those for the B5 models. I've been using these bases without any problems. Some other people like the bases from Ninja Magic.
