Hard Boiled Private Eye In Mega City One?

Hey folks,

I'm working on a character that's kind of an ex-judge private eye. Kind of modeled on Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade... maybe even a little Mike Hammer, but without Hammer's racism, homophobia or commie obsession. Actually... Maybe there's some sov-block history there too.

Anyway, the concept for this character is "toughest Private Dick in all of MC1"

I was thinking something like Street Judge level 6, and Citizen level 5. Does that sound about right?

Here's a brief history:

"Early in his training and career, Quaid failed to distinguish himself on the firing range. While other judge-candidates were hitting bullseye every time, he was struggling to meet the required level of Lawgiver accuracy.

He was far more successful in the Daystick and Hand To Hand training, though this was partly due to his natural toughness. While he was not as technically expert with the Daystick or at Hand-to-Hand as other Judge-Candidates, he tended to win sparring bouts both with Daystick and Close Quarters Combat (A military form of hand to hand taught to judges, hereafter referred to as CQC), scoring less hits than his opponents but soaking up more punishment and eventually grinding them down.

The area that he did excel however was the Law itself. By an early age his knowledge of Mega City One law was exemplary. He took to detection techniques very well, and showed great aptitude for interrogation and questioning methods.

After graduation he served a few years as a rookie judge, gaining the respect of other judges by his fortitude, his integrity, and his decisiveness in all legal matters. Dredd himself was once heard to comment after having worked briefly with Judge Quaid and allowed him to sentence the perps once they were caught: "That kid knows the law."
n his seventh year on the force, Quaid was partnered with another street judge, Judge Stanwyck.

She was similar to him in many ways, she cared for the law with a real fervour, and she had a bright, quick mind. She was a little zealous at times, and sometimes her hot-headedness led to a little more action than was necessary, but overall they made an excellent team.

One night on Patrol they were looking into rumours of smuggling at the MC1 Docking District 15. They discovered some Sino City slavers, but as they were swooping in to make the bust they spotted something else, a group of guys opening a freight container, at three AM. They radioed in the Sino City slavers, and watched the men at the container until backup came to pull in the slavers. They remained on surveillance for the rest of the night, but the men did not emerge from the container. Finally they went in, calling it in. They burst into the container, and a fight ensued. They were hit with Stumm rounds by the men inside, and though they managed to kill a couple of the perps, they eventually succumbed and lost consciousness.

They woke to discover they were being spirited away on a freight ship to offworld. They managed to escape their bonds and had an adventure that lasted three days, during which they fought their way back from a terrorist base on Mars, discovered a plot to kill Chief Justice Hershey, and also to recondition judges. This was a big one. A massively rich citizen captain of industry was involved, one with a reputation for giving generously to charities and the Justice Department itself, and the race against time was both to stop the assassins from getting to Hershey and also to find some way of convincing Hershey of the plot.

In the end, they arrived as Hershey was making a routine public appearance. They were bedraggled and beleaguered, but they managed to stop the assassins and protect Hershey, trashing most of a floor of a shopping block in the process. They received special decorations, and went after and caught the Trillionaire at the heart of the conspiracy.

However, during those fateful three days away from the eye of the Eagle of justice, feelings erupted between Quaid and Stanwyck. They began a torrid affair that continued for months until they were inevitably discovered. When they were caught, Judge Hershey herself decided on clemency for them, and Dredd spoke on their behalf, having been impressed with Quaid in the past and also bearing some loyalty to them for saving his longtime friend Hershey.
They were given the offer to retire to citizen life, like Judge DeMarco had done after caught having an affair with a fellow judge.

Figuring he could continue to do some kind of useful work in the city, Quaid accepted. It was only afterwards that he was informed that Stanwyck had declined, and requested to be allowed to take The Long Walk.

He thought about following her... but he knew that something in her would never forgive him, or indeed herself, for the affair that destroyed both their careers in the Justice Department.

Fast forward a few years and Quaid is widely known as the toughest Private Dick in all of Mega City One. He's been thrown out of more high society parties than most paparazzi, and he's been kicked, stabbed and shot more than most judges. He still has some connections on the force, but no friends. That's just not possible for a disgraced judge.

He's fond of women and liquor, but still has something of the tarnished knight about him, a desperate honesty that remains beneath his veneer of cynicism and world weariness.

Any input or suggestions, I'd be delighted to hear them. Er, I used to post here as Doc Holliday but due to my old email being on a defunct email provider, I couldn't get my password reset once I forgot it.

Cheers folks!

Ive always been a big fan of the old disgruntled gum shoe. MC-1 is a great setting for that type of story line. Maybe give him a connection within the justice department that can help with MAC access, a re-occuring nemisis or two. Atlantis is another good setting for this type of campaign.

Atlantis! Good thinking, we've played two sessions in MC-1 so far and it's been great... but Atlantis is going to make a great spot for a case.

Thanks Thrash

The Atlantis supplement was so well written and has a huge amount of private citizen information.
Many adventures can be found there, my best one involved a Project Fathom Super Soldier, sort of like the Harmon Gill story.

quick question or me beaing abit thick here:

was wandering how the perps got there hands on Stumm gas, and judges automaticly have reprerators on there helms

It's quite possible to catch some unaware... if they don't succumb immediately, then they put on the respirator. Also, it does obscure the area in the comics.

Plenty of good ideas here.

As to the question as to where the perps got the Stumm gas, and why the Judges respirators didn't help them, is there any reason why it has to be Stumm? As far as I can see you just need the Judges captured alive. Dart guns, sonic weapons, taser type stun guns or even just too many opponents hitting them could all do the trick.
