Gorns

On the Tholian thread, stated you had some Tholian ships sat on your desk - don't suppose there are any Gorn keeping them company :D , - you did say on Planet Mongoose that stuff on the Kzinti and Gorn was forthcoming, and i can't hold my breath this long

Bring on the Lizards (roll on Feb/Mar 8)

Yes i need the Gorn. My children picked all the other races and left me with the Gorn. I will make em pay for that decision.

Hey Gorn ships are not fat, they are just big boned

Going to be a long few months till the Gorn ships arrive to crush all who are slow enough to get in front of them.........

You mean, of course as any sane individual would say, waiting for the Hydrans - the targets, sorry Lyrans, are merely an afterthought for that release
:D

Yes, clearly I meant that :D

Bah. Be off with you both. Furballs and methane sucking stumpy things. You both exist merely to give the Kzinti and Klingons something to shoot at.

Anyway back to the Gorns. Any ideas about Gorn ship stats yet. Do they have higher hull to reflect the Gorn inner armour (central Hull) or are they soft and squishy like a romulan

What more do you need than unconvincing-looking rubber dinosaurs?

Why everyone gotta be hating against the Lyrans?? :D Well-built ships with good firepower, if a little power-deficient at times....

Gorn ships should indeed be tough and well-armed. And some of the worst turn modes in the game

Unrefitted ones can be horribly power deficient - oh and the ESGs a) make them road hogs (just ask the Romulans) and b) help avoid my hellbores.

Trimaran hulls -are- horribly power deficient, none of this 'can be' nonsense :) Fortunately the power pack refit was introduced soon after the first trimaran hulls came out. And yes, ESGs (Expanding Sphere Generators, for those who may be wondering) are one of the few items which will give Romulan commanders nightmares. :D Tholian webs are another one.

Now here we arrive at the real issue, the Hellbore / ESG interaction. ESGs can absorb the brunt of a Hellbore's firepower while at the same time acting as Hellbore magnets (auto-hit against an active ESG). That is one of the things I really like about SFB.

SFB fleets are generaly very well balanced against the locals and unbalanced against the guys from the other side of the quadrant. Hey plasma race have 30 Kzinti drones to play with this turn

The Hydran/Lyran ESG/HB is one of the better standoffs that make the game so good. It forces you to think tactics rather than full spped ahead and fire generic weapon A.

Annoyingly the drone side fare better against the plasma side due to all those anti drone phasers (well apart from the Lyran who have an anti drone ESG which doesn't work against incoming great balls of plasma death  ).

On the plasma side we tend to do badly against the drone types as we lack the drone defences which means phaser 1s on anti drone which cuts down the firepower.

Though the Roms get the worst of it. Since you can see the cloaks ESG rams become nasty but the Lyrans also have less phasers for defence against plasmas since the ESG is there to do that job so a ROM/Lyran battle involves a lot of manouvre followed by some short bloody firing. Makes for non traditional campaigns and wars with lots of fun.

Waiting for the Gorn review. Waiting for the rule book, waiting for the gorn fleet. Too much waiting around here

The Lyrans which will, eventually, be in ACTA will be from the FC data, which has the refitted versions (pretty much everything bar the gunboat mech-links). If ACTA follows FC's lead, ESGs will be treated as a direct-fire, short-ranged weapon that damages everything within a specified radius of the ship. That gets you all of the flavour and none of the calories of the SFB ESG rules.

I like that. I always enjoyed the Lyrans, they have nice looking ships with a well thought out design and tactical philosophy. I found the ESGs awkward to use when I wasn’t playing SFB regularly, (announce, wait, cancel, wait, announce again) but it sounds like this will make them into a cool system which is easy to use.
