Good approach, but there is some scope for both approaches. The path of trickster is rarely voluntary, but it's very interesting trying to play a fundamentally sane character who has cought the interest / received the curse of the trickster.

90% of the Trickster's I have seen in the past 20 years have been annoying fish-malks. That's about... hmm... about 15 trickster characters. Only two actually played it as a curse or took it seriously. Sadly, most of the players who take Trickster characters are the kind of people who play Kender in Dragonlance games.
Yes, everyone's heard about that wonderful trickster played by a friend's brother's cousin in another country but... they are as rare as as a generous Lankhor Mhy scholar. Wish I could be less cynical but I'm not.
