The exact truth is pretty unknowable, and ought, IMO to remain so. That way you can use whichever theory best suits your game without having the setting decide on a single "true" answer and invalidating other solutions.

My own theory? Arkat won, but in order to do so he had to resort to the same tactics Nysalor used. Think Luke fighting Darth Vader and destroying him using the powers of the Dark Side. Victory, yes, but at the price of becoming what you hated so much.

Mostal only knows what Dwarfs eat, and I think even they don't like it.

Dwarfs eat processed food that comes in tins. Nobody except the Quicksilver alchemists knows what goes into the tins.

However, dwarfs who develop a fault in their operation, or reach the end of their operating lifespan, are usually ordered to report to the Quicksilver alchemists for one last special duty. The nature of that duty is a closely guarded secret...

Basically dwarf food comes in a few varieties. Unfortunately I forget the names, but the contents were basically

a) Processed meat (including humans)
b) Processed vegetables (including elves)
c) Daily stew (whatever was in the traps & leftovers)

This is apparently a really, really big secret. Only the food processing dwarves know, and the rest would seriously wig out if the did. Food is something hygienic that comes in tins! It's not something that has grown in the dirt (urgh!) or run about going oink (double urgh!).
