Gypsy Knights Games

Cosmic Mongoose
Are you curious about Clement Sector?

Always wanted to know more about Gypsy Knights Games' Traveller setting but were afraid to ask? Didn't know who to ask?

Well, now you can find out more and in the comfort of your own home! An Introduction to Clement Sector will give you all of the information you need to understand the fastest growing alternate Traveller setting. This document gives you the basics of the setting, explains the history and details the Zimm Drive. In addition, we've provided a sample scenario taken from 21 Plots: Misbehave and a sample Clement Sector planetary system taken from Dade Colonies.

And we give all of this to you for the low, low cost of free!

So go ahead! Take one! Adventure awaits!

I like this preview a lot.

One question though, what is the range of the Zimm? Some sources seem to say a straight 2 parsec range while others 2.4 parsecs, which is very close to the 7.7 LY range of the 2300 AD stutter warp.

Also when does one check for Zimm bubble collapse with regards to larger ships and can the drive be re-started after collapse. If so is there a wait period during which the vessel is stuck adrift in deep space?

I really like the setting, but there seems to have been too little impact upon the closing of the Conduit. Where is the desperation? Also, some world populations seem way too high since the Clement Sector has only been open to colonization for about 110 years (including 11 years post-Conduit). What is the post-Conduit Clement Sector missing or dangerously short of? Are Zimm Drive ships running dangerously low on spare Zimm cores? Do people hoard real Colombian coffee? Can I sell 80's Earth rock and roll for millions of credits?

Maybe I skim read too many planetary descriptions but I personally would like a bit more depth and a less generic Traveller-esque approach to the setting.

Cool! Glad you're enjoying it!

The maximum range is 2.4 parsecs. Most ship captains use 2 parsecs as the maximum so as not to "press their luck". As for 2300, I'm afraid I don't know enough about 2300 to comment.

Also when does one check for Zimm bubble collapse with regards to larger ships and can the drive be re-started after collapse. If so is there a wait period during which the vessel is stuck adrift in deep space?

The roll is made after the jump roll is finished. We usually recommend that the Referee decide where the bubble burst as this kind of thing can really sidetrack a campaign or game.

As for if the drive can be restarted, it depends on how badly you missed the roll. While there is not a hard rule currently in the book, I recommend that if they barely missed the roll, the drive should still be intact. If they missed by a wide margin, then the drive is not functional. We've so far felt this was also best left to be the Referee's decision.

Currently, there is not a hard and fast rule as to how long you have to wait. I'd say 2d6 hours for functional drives.

I really like the setting, but there seems to have been too little impact upon the closing of the Conduit. Where is the desperation? .... What is the post-Conduit Clement Sector missing or dangerously short of? Are Zimm Drive ships running dangerously low on spare Zimm cores? Do people hoard real Colombian coffee? In most cases, I'd say there is no desperation at all. Clement Sector is loaded with natural resources and many of the worlds have the industrial capability to continue. Most of the reaction is psychological and this has seen several governmental changes, new religions, changes in the trade structure and even one all-out civil war. A lot of people have family and friends who were once a few jumps and a Conduit trip away that will now never be seen again.

As for the rare items, we have several adventures in the 21 Plots series that emphasize just that. There are folks hoarding old movies, old books, genuine Scotch and champagne mentioned in these adventures. Not so sure about the 80s rock though!

Also, some world populations seem way too high since the Clement Sector has only been open to colonization for about 110 years (including 11 years post-Conduit).

I think I've said it on this thread before but it bears repeating. I think if I've made any mistake on the setting it was the high populations. If I could go back and change anything, that's what it would be. Even with people living to be 250 and the population explosion that would cause plus the altrants and the uplifts, I'm not sure that I could really justify the huge populations on some worlds. That's my mistake and I'm afraid I own it.

Thanks for the answers John.

I was wondering if there was any way to get a little preview as to the stats for the Lexington-class cruisers. As the Moltke at 2500dTons is said to be the toughest ships in the Clement Sector I would guess the Lexingtons would be around 2000-2200 dTons. This makes them sufficiently smaller than the Moltke but larger than the Farraguts.

Also, how many Lexingtons are there in the Clement Sector? By my count I get about 28.

Three squadrons at Sequayah; one of which came from Wellington shortly after the Conduit collapse. Five ships each for 15 ships total, but none are named.

Two Squadrons at Boone; all of which are named. 10 ships total

One squadron was at Sophronius but due to the situation there two ships were destroyed, one left the system and the two remaining ships are damaged. Total of 3 more ships, all of which are named.

That seems like a lot, especially when supported by a perhaps even larger number of Farraguts. If the USSN fleet at Boone and Sequayah get together they be a serious rival to the Hub Federation.

Thanks,
Ben Lecrone

No problem! Happy to do it!

You're close concerning the size of the Lexes but a little over.

You are absolutely correct!

Sequoyah and Boone getting together is somewhat unlikely. Guwisguwi, despite being a USSN vet, is very much a separatist and not at all interested in sharing power with the folks on Boone. That bit of information is alluded to in SS4: Sequoyah but will be elaborated on in a future product.

If you are interested in reading about the Hub Federation Navy, then I would strongly recommend the Hub Federation Navy Source book. Not only does the book cover the background, organisation and navy career options but the appendices include a listing of the active commissioned ships of the HFN as of 2342. The list also includes new construction.

I have that book and the ship books. I was interested in more information for the United States Space Navy.

Thanks

It is on the way. In fact, there is information on all of the fleets of Clement Sector on the way soon.

Going to say go for it people its a great setting and I really enjoy it. Just started a Classic Free Trader game and it is set in the Clement Sector which I think fits perfectly.

Oh speaking of stuff is there any place that consolidates the Space Pirate stuff? One of my players is a big fan of 80's style Action flicks and using this as fluff is proving to be a lot of fun. Its one of those things where I am not sure if there is going to be a future product with it or should I just make stuff up.

The majority of what we have currently published for it is in Ships of Clement Sector 6: Jinsokuna Chirashi-class yacht which, for those who do not know, can be purchased at this link. We do have a Superpirate! sourcebook planned for the future though. It is still in the very early stages of production at this point.

However, given the highly over the top nature of the Superpirate! holovid, I'd say you can feel free to make up some crazy stuff. It should fit in nicely.

That's one of my favorite supplement's and my inspiration of making the show part of my campaign. Looking forward to the Superpirate sourcebook my player will like it. Just to give you a hint of how much fun he is having with it he wears a Tricorn hat to the table, and has been making up episodes, the most recent is where Drake is offered President for Life of the Southern Alliance but turns it down by saying "its a Pirates Life for me" and then started singing.

That is absolutely outstanding! I'm so pleased that he (and you) are enjoying it.

Sort of a Clement Sector version of The Military Balance? :)
