Getting VPs from a single ship

If a ship is crippled, skeleton crew and withdraws, do you get VP for all three? I have always played that you did, but we have a slight disagreement, since the rules say you can only score VPs from a ship once.

So do you score:

A) 1/4 points for crippled, 1/4 for skeleton crewed plus 1/4 for withdrawing.
B) 1/2 points for both skeleton crew and crippling.
C) just 1/4 points.

Giving it some consideration, I can see value in all three possibilities - players should be rewarded for doing more damaged, and in one off games the enemy should be penalised for withdrawing. In campaign games, the opposite is true - once a ship is crippled or skeleton crewed, there should be no additional penalty for withdrawing, in fact it is probably the optimal course of action. Although saving a ship is its own reward.

A single ship can only score for a ship once so if 1 ship cripples + skeleton crews + destroys the ship it only gets the highest Value.

However if multiple ships cause this. IE 1 ship cripplies 1 ship destroys the same ship then they both get the VPS listed.

No. They don't. VPs are calculated by side not ship.

o oops I was thinking Exp not Vps sorry for the confusion.

I think there should be a penalty for withdrawing. As you put serviving the battle is it's own reward.

He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.

I've only ever played it you get 1/4 points (i.e. you only ever score once from each ship) and as far as I know, I can't see anything in the rules to contradict that.

You only get VP once from each ship, and you get the best score possible for what you did to it. If there is a joint highest score, you get one of them only.

LBH

We also always thought hitting both thresholds was rewarded, your saying that once you threshold something it cannot give up more points short of destruction?

Ripple

Ripple,

We counted it (apparently) wrong at Chicago III, IV, and V as well. Doh!

I wonder how many people were playing it the other way -- and think that it's better.

I do. Just my opinion, though.

It's just as LBH already said (highest VP once only), think lots of people get mixed up due to the way XP are awarded. You won't more points if a ship at either or both threshold disengages, but can get the bonus for holding ground in some scenarios if they all do.

It does seem a bit harsh if you have managed to cripple and/or skeleton crew a ship and it runs away as well that you only get 1/4 XP total.

IMHO 1/2 Xp for any ship that runs / retreats and is crippled and/or skeleton crewed would be fairer?

:D

But surely if your opponent manages to escape with his crippled ship rather than leaving it lying around to be destroyed later, it is more of an achievement for him than you? So he should be rewarded for saving his ship, by only giving away 1/4 VP. If you know what I mean ;)

I think you should get 1/2 for a ship which runs off. The reward is that the player gets to use that ship again (in a campaign that is).

yes I see what you mean :) -except:

You are normally rewarded for crippling / skeleton crewing a ship - reducing a enemies capacity to fight

You are normally rewarded for (unless scenario says otherwise) driving an enemy off.

Seems to me you should still get both?

The retreating player gets to keep their ship............thats a reward?

Well running a crippled / skeleton crewed ship off the board in a camapign game means you get to keep that ship to repair and use.

Okay agree with you on the 1/4 for crippled / skeleton crew and running off.

As the person that queried the rule in the first place, and being the one that profited from it (only giving up 3VPs instead of 8 for withdrawing my crippled and skeleton crewed Sharlin) I still have to say that the reward for my opponent seemed a little low...
I agree with Da Boss on this one and think that if a crippled and/or skeleton crewed ship withdraws from the fight, then the opposing player should garner 1/2 VPs - I also think this should apply in Campaign AND normal play 8)
