Getting up to grips with astronomy

I know very little about Astronomy, despite running many Traveller adventures. I was wondering, what is the best way to get up to speed with Astronomy for use in Traveller games? I've got an old copy of GURPS Space. Not too sure if it is still relevant.

TIA :)

If you are really interested in astronomy, you could take an intro astronomy class at a local community college. I teach one, and I see a number of people in my classes who are just interested in space exploration and astronomy, but are not regular students.

When I started messing with Traveller back in the late 70s, I became much more interested in mathematics, astronomy and other sciences that were often used in the game material. Suddenly algebra made sense when you had formulas that were relevant. I started buying various books on astronomy because my interest was very much piqued. You don't have to go full blown textbook, there are many general works that have a wealth of fascinating information. Go browse the library or bookstore and see what catches your eye and mind.

The Backyard Astronomer's Guide is what got me re-hooked, now on it's 3rd edition.

It's a how-to guide to getting out there and seeing stuff for yourself, telescopes and whatnot.

Thankyou, very enlightening, you have increased the complexity of this corner of the Universe :) I've posted it on FaceBook as well.

As a very basic start into orbital mechanics start playing Kerbal Space Program (although much of the shown mechanics there are rendered void if you have gravity control).
