Thanks.
They are all pinned on with 0.7mm brass rod. It took ages.
As for placement, I tracked down online images of the packaging. Then copied the picture. There isn't really a right answer here, as I found out afterwards that the actual omega-x has much fewer and smaller spikes. So as the kit isn't 'canon' you have free reign with the spiky bits.
Not sure about the "pro" part, I've just painted a lot of ships (and Lord knows what else). I'm waiting for a Shadow ship model to show up. I'll paint it then and put it up for criticism here. The "sparkly bits" I had in mind is some of that costume nail polish with the fine glitter in it that the little girls like to wear sometimes.
I'm still waiting for my Shadow fleet to arrive, about 6 weeks after I ordered it, but what I plan on doing is to start with a base coat of metallic grey, then lightly spray black over it. This should give a fine grain mottled effect.
As an experiment, I tried it on a piece of scrap plastic sprue which I'm guessing is about the same thickness as the average Shadow spine. Here's how it looks. Spot size isn't uniform, but it's still a lot better than I'd manage by any hand-brushed technique. (The base coat here is not the metallic grey I'll use for the Shadows, but a light greyish-blue which I happened to have lying around and wasn't using for much else. )
