General ideas on changes?

When i played ACTA b5 the initiative was a huge problem, not to mention if you bought more lower priority ships you had more hit points and attack dice. I'm curious if they did away with the priority system and went with a combat value of some sort?

I"m just hoping i'll be able to find people in the Portland Oregon area that will play Noble armada, i didn't think second edition was perfect but it was an enjoyable game to play that was easy to teach. I do kind of like the new crit system as far as damage being toned down but dependent on the difference in life of a smaller ship to the larger ship its ability to take more crits may or may not help. As an example if you have a 10 hit point ship thats taken a few crits that reduce combat ability compared to say a 30 hit point ship with the same crits your losing out on alot more and while yes the ship can survive it's functionality is down quite a bit and the other player will have 1 ship in similar shape crit wise and possibly 2 other untouched vessels.....dependent on points values and such.

I'm very hopeful that ACTA noble armada is going to kick butt.....very hopeful :)

Critical hits are...not exactly reduced in intensity (for that matter, the highest level of reactor critical is Bang! and the warship is gone....), but they are harder to get.

A) What was the Shields trait is now effectively universal. That means that a significant portion of the beating a ship takes is absorbed by something that can't suffer criticals.

B) Whilst a high-end critical can still (say) knock out your guns, this requires several weapons criticals in a row. To get a weapons-5 critical (oh bugger the guns just stopped firing) you'll need 5 criticals to the weapons, which means at least 5 and probably more like 30 critical hits, which means probably 5-6 times that much damage. Very few ships will still be in a state where you give a damn about them after that much punishment.

C) I'm not sure there are unrepairable vital systems hits anymore.

Essentially, yes, criticals will still be a big bit of the game. Possibly bigger. But they're more sensible in the way they behave - it's no longer possible for a light patrol boat's single attack dice to take out an entire dreadnoughts prow armament in the first shot of the game. You can still disable the dreadnought's guns, but you're going to have to kick the bejeezus out of it first.

I believe that once criticals get to level 5 or 6 (in any area) they become unrepairable.

Ah. Fair enough. What I meant was that there's no vital systems critical track, that's unrepairable from the get-go.

Yes you are correct there is no single track that is unrepairable. Instead they all become unrepairable when they get too serious. I suspect All Hands On Deck might be used a bit more often :)

All Hands to Deck is a godsend with this critical system as you have nasty crits which can escalate and give extra crits to other systems. It is a nice system which makes sense in its progression. It does not have that 6 6 crit from a fighter which makes the big ship go boom.

I prefer the new system.

sounding good so far. Just hoping for points values as opposed to the priority system, but have to wait and see how it all plays out. I'll certainly be getting the game at first so i can poke through and see whats what. Probably just play with counters and try to get some friends interested :)

shields traits works entirely differant to what it did in 2e and is really quite good. should help the bigger ships against smaller ships as well.

as burger said once a crit gets to 6 thats no more repairing in that crit.

can't wait to get my mits on the rulebook......getting a new roomate and he'd almost certainly be willing to give it a try :)

probly pick up runequest 2 while i'm at it.....interested in something new on the roleplaying side of things.
