Gaim

Yes, shortly after they came out (the same day!). This is a cut/paste from the first 'new Gaim' thread:

5 point raid, Vree vs Gaim. He took a battle level queen, 2 assault ships (raid) and two gunships (skirmish). I took four Xill battle saucers (raid) and four Ximm close escorts (patrol). I won, but it was close; I had three Xills left, two of which had Gaim troops on board.

My thoughts:
- they are more balenced, as far as I can tell from one game
- fleet carrier is very very good for them. My opponent recovered a large number of flights which got shot down by AF or intercepter duty
- the assult ships are good if they can get multiple targets in their arcs, but are easy for the Vree to out-manouver
- the new photon bombs are a real threat to the fragile Vree ships, but shouldn't be too nasty for more durable fleets
- boarding pods are no where near as unpleasant. They used to be an auto-kill (with enough time) if they got into contact, but they're much more handleable now
- The bigger queens are tough to crack - fortunatly, a 6-6 crit with double damage took out the intercepters, and sealed the queens death
- The lower number of fighters wasn't too much of a pain for him, as the larger ships were able to keep launching fully until they died, so extra flights wouldn't have helped
- escorts are very useful!

Only the one, though. Was there anything in particular you were interested in?

Just wondered what they where like. I think there very balanced now yet still assault heavy if you want them that way.

I played one 6pt raid game with them so far against wkehrman's Dilgar and won. I think some of that was due to fleet composition on his part. Basically, though he won initiaitive at times, I simply had many more ships than he did due to him bringing a Mankhat (War level ship), not to mention he only had five ships total, four of which were in the pentacon formation. I took my normal fleet (same as I basically used before the change) of:

1 queen battleship (Shrutaa)
1 raid queen (Shaakak)
2 Assault ships (Skrunnkas)
2 Gunships (Sataakas)
2 Scouts (Staks)

He started by vaporizing one of my Sataakas before it could do anything, but that was about the end of the damage he did. By the end of (I think) turn 4, he had destroyed the one Sataaka and done a little damage to some other ships. I had destroyed 1 scout, one other ship (I forget which, I think an Ochlavita), and decrewed the Mankhat. I think I was also about to board his Garasoch, but I forget. During the game I did manage to successfully Run Silent a couple times, one of which was with my Queen Battleship which ended up preventing the Mankhat from firing at it for a turn. Wkehrmen can jump in if I missed something or got it wrong.

Anyway, I'm not sure this was a good example of whether the new Gaim are good or bad. I think a rematch is in order with a bit more balanced Dilgar as opposition. JMO though.

Cheers, Gary
