Gaim Erratics as PCs

Gaim of all breeds can be erratics. They are tolearted and can become starfarers. Would you allow an erratic tender (a medic or scientist), thinker (engineer or trader) or even warrior as a PC in your game?

Well I have two PCs to add to the Ragged Edge just before War of the Queens. I figure a Gaim would be a good one, since the Gaim want to know what is going on. I was prepared to convert the stats from the 1e LoNAW book. I was just wondering whether it was a good idea.

Derina, what breed of Gaim are there stats for in H&A? Just ambassador or other breeds too?

Actually, if you play War of the Queens as written, a Gaim PC would be VERY difficult. If I remember correctly, any Gaim at all brought within range of the mad queen would go mad itself and probably turn homicidal, or at least be very very crazy.

On the other hand, it'd be the perfect place to pick up a Gaim PC AFTER the rogue queen was dead. Though I doubt the rest of the Gaim would take that very well.

On this topic...how would an erratic Gaim work as a PC? Wouldn't all the Gaim be gunning for it? In a rogue party running a more Freedom Station/Firefly/Bounty hunter style, I can see it, but any group that docked w/ B5 would probably have hunters and political pressure to deal with. (Unless I'm wrong on how the Gaim handle rogues)

If I did allow a Gaim PC, I think I'd be fine with a non-erratic. The Gaim hive mind appears to be complicated enough to simulate free will (look at the Gaim ambassador's behavior on B5), so a PC who wanted to play one could probably do whatever they wanted, so long as they kept some general guidelines in mind (like the compulsion to try to make every situation pay off for the Gaim, or to never knowingly harm Gaim interests)

I did see the part of WotQ where a Gaim will go berserk when I was rereading it. I figure I'll alter that to allow willpower rolls to resist the urge.

As for an erratic being hunted, the LoNAW book says erratics are tolerated as long as they do not pose a danger to the Intellegence.

My player has decidedon an erratic ambassador. I figure he is something of a traveller among the stars who has an interest in alien races. The Gaim Queens will occasionally call on him to investigate something that affects Gaim interests among the stars.

Makes sense to me. Sounds like a workable concept, if erratics are tolerated.

Will saves are good, but what if the PC fails one? Back to square one. If the PC is entering in this scenario, you might want to consider an additional safety net, since a single failed roll might make the PC unplayable for a time (or permanently if they have to put him down to keep him from wasting the party). The first thing that came to mind was something special from the Queens, like a little vial of pheromones or cranial implant or something, that he can sniff/zap himself/whatever when he starts to lose control. And of course the reason he can do it and the rest of their drones can't is because he's erratic and already outside all Queen control, so he has a chance to stop himself from accepting the rogue Queen's commands.

This will be handled in greater detail in a later book. I have it on good authority. 8)
