Food and drink of the 'verse....

Mongoose
Ok with the recent addition of NearC on the Rocks and Planet Crackers to Traveller's lexicon of fictional consumables a fair number of other bad ideas have popped up.

Algae in a Can. A Perennial favorite of isolated station dwellers. Flavored and textured Algae in a can. (think cheese in a can)

Shelf Melons, another station dweller delight, melons that have been bred to produce cube shaped fruit.

Square fish ... we are almost there:

Fun-pops

Small, metallic pouches, that when you break an inner pouch grow a huge portabello like 'fun'gus. It takes a couple of days for them to grow. But. they then expand the outer pouch and 'pop' open to the size of a large grapefruit.

Those with Lower Soc tend to find them a delicacy. With children watching them grow and hiss as their covers stretch.

A Fun-pop's final edibility is based on the steward skill. Exceptional success, a meal to remember. Failure, -1 DM to all skill checks for 1D6 hours -End DM

Roll after the meal.

Insects as food. Tracheal breathing and being cold-blooded mean that they're very energy-efficient (and thus consume far less feed per unit of meat output). Some insect are very efficient eating machines (especially at their larval stage) and and protein-rich. They also tend to be relatively tolerant to environmental conditions.

All in all, great for raising in colonies where space is limited, conditions are harsh and feedstock is in short supply.

Oh, and some locust species are Kosher, too...
