Fixed mounts and fire control

On p111 of TMB, in the table of turrets and other mounts, it states that a fixed mount takes up 0 tons.

However, in HG small craft rules, it says that all weapons need 1 ton of fire control, despite referring to p111, and every subsequent fighter design has had 1 ton allocated to fire control.

So what is right, and what is the point of a fixed mount if it gives no benefits?

It's Cheaper.

And in smallcraft you can have to with up to five weapons.....

And yes it is inconsistent.

Not exactly:

High Guard said:
One ton of fire control equipment is must be installed for each turret or fixed pount (see p111 core rulebook).

This isn't every weapon, just turret weapons. Even mentions torpedoes can be carried, these don't take up any extra space for fire control (Look at the Torpedo Boat for example), also Anti-Personal Mount's don't have the 1 ton fire control requirement.

That's why I query it. The text seems to override the TMB text, but then it refers to it directly.

For small craft that 1 ton is incredibly significant.

May I point out that in CT a heavy fighter is 50 dTons.....

Even at 50dTons, that single ton could be 3 days of fuel, or the difference between civ sensors and mil sensors, or whther it can carry 6 missiles or 18.

Having just got Fighting Ships, it seems that the MGT designers aren't quite sure either, with one fighter using 2 tons of fire control on personal scale weapon slots.

Some designs have t ton of FC per slot, which makes fixed mounts significantly inferior to turrets in all ways except being a teensy lil' bit cheaper.

There is also a fighter design published with two turrets!

Seems there's some major confusion regarding small craft.

OK, my interim fix is that 1t of FC works for all fixed mounts. Still means there's no benefit for going fixed rather than turreted for fighters less than 90tons apart from a 100Kcr here or there. Not much difference to a multi-megacred vessel.

Can't work out why a fixed mount should require any fire control over and above the sensors, seen as you track targets by pointing the ship, rather than having to track from a moving platform....

just a quick question,

you can have upto 3 fixed mounts on a fighter for example do they all have to be the same type?

i've got in mind a space superiority fighter, not quick but manoverable and heavily armed. i can't fathom whether you have to have 3 pulse lasers for example or 2 pulse lasers and a missile system?

Yes you can have mixed weapons on a small craft. The Boarding Craft in High Guard is an example of this.

For me in the ship killer role I would go with a PA Barbette, two Missile launchers and a Sandcaster. On a buffed up hull and structure, splitting the remaining space between armor and speed.

The barbette would replace the other weapons...

And your right! had another 100dTon design stuck in my head.
