First Time Slaine ?'s

Hello Slaine fans.

I'm planning on running a Slaine game this weekend with the Savage Worlds conversion. I also bought the new RQ Slaine book for setting info.

I have a couple questions because I've never actually read the comic (really really really want to though! Not as popular here in the U.S.) but I love the Tain.

My question is how Warped Ones are treated by the rest of the tribespeople. All I can find in the book is that most Celts aren't entirely happy associating with them. What does that mean? Are people just a little wary around them? -"Be careful around that guy."
Or are warped ones total loners among those who know?
Do villagers and innkeepers deny them hospitality?

Also, are all able-bodied tribesmen warriors? Are there folks who are just 'farmers' or 'merchants'?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

My question is how Warped Ones are treated by the rest of the tribespeople.

Thats a hard question to answer. Though I couldn't find any informatioon to support why a Warped One would get treated any differently, I do remember reading something of this in D20 Slaine.

I thought they might suffered from a lowered Charisman, but there appers to be none of that.

Apply some common sence, as Warped-Ones appaer to be normal all times except when warped and at that they are alittle taller and more savge looking.

They're sort of like a anceint version of a bikey or terrorist.

They might have projectile weapons aimed at them, swords pointed at them nervously when being dealt with by Tribeal mebersif they are known to be Warped.

Surely they friends and family would be have some built up resistance to thsi fear.

Maybe your not the only warped warrior in the tribe.

Druids might understand this condition and not be afraid or discriminating.

Ukko and the Dwarf, despite being cowardly and constantly beaten by Slaine doesn't appaer to be otherwise unaturally afraid of Slaine.

He may cheating towards or rude towards the barbarian, but that is part of his nature.

A warped thief or vagabond is naturally going to get treat worse than a Warped King and Slaine has seem both sides of this.

With regards to common sence it to depend on how experienced the idivdual charater dealing with the warp-one is. They may be nerous or rudely dscriminating or treat them as a hero. Espeically if they just saved the village.

Depends on alos how much they would like to deal with a warpo-one who has decided to Warp-out because they just upset him.

are warped ones total loners among those who know?

Slaine was a loner because he was thrown out of his tribe for seduicing the King'sride to be, not because he was warped. Although that might havebn a factor. Ireally not so sure mysefl if Slaine warp side was kept secret from the rest of the tribe. or not. Otherwise I think almost treated like blessing. Excpet people still might be careful around him.

Do villagers and innkeepers deny them hospitality?

Despneds on their personal relations to that tribe or innkeeper. depnds on how well they treat freindly monsters and how stable that warped stranger is.
If they are a hero or king they should still expect better than usel treamnet.

Slaine the vagabond was hunted relentlessly and locked up when caught.
Slaine the king was respected.

Fell fre to disagree me incase you think I got it wrong.

It's a interesting point, as it's question that seems more simple to answer only when first thinking about it.

The whole time I was, I was also thinking of that part from Highlander when Colin Macleod gets ostrcised from his clan and home when he came back to lfe. Of course those Scots were christinised by that time. At a guess. I remember seeing the holy men and friars during the clan battle fighting by their sides.

People in the time of Slaine were Pagans and perhaps more tolerant of the abberant nature of the Warped.

Thanks for the info Standing-Stone.

I had to reply to offer thanks and to report that this past weekend's game was INCREDIBLE!!!

I've been running 'The Cattle Raid of Tighean Dubh' adventure. I have been using the Savage Worlds Conversion by Superc0ntra. My group has had the most fun we've had in a long time. We haven't played Savage Worlds for a while and so this time we were using the newer SWEX rules. I think it captured the savage nature of Tir Nan Og quite well.

It took a little time getting used to how you are supposed to RP in the world of Tir Nan Og, but once we got it, man was it fun! Taking Heads, Seducing young lassies, and brawling for the Champion's Portion! -That's just plain Man-tastic!

They're sort of like a anceint version of a bikey or terrorist
Thats a bit harsh, speaking as a biker who has served under the colours.

Sorry, to offend, Ronzo the Grim, but in your experiences. While you were wearing your colours are you aware of being treated diffrently in certain places.

Usaulley in civc areas, I guess.

Particalley if your by yourself and in your colours.

I know it was probably silly of me to put Bikey and Terrorist in the same sentance like I was trying to imply something.

Like I miant one was supposed to be mistaken for the other.

NO, I didn't mean that, I was actually referring to a outlaw or criminal element that is thus recognised and treated differently.

I should have said OUTLAW.

I might also mention... a Rockstar with a known reputation for being a typical rockstar if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the info Standing-Stone.

Actualely, you can probably forget evryhting I wrote beforer in reply to your query. As I think it's really a persoanl choice.

Modified by some obvious factors.

AS for my refereance to 'Highlander' I think that worth remerbing.

Just forgget evrrything else I said.
Okay.

Your right Standing Stone, while wearing my uniform, I have been subjected to a lot of abuse, both verbal and physical, and as a tattooed biker I have seen 'proper' people giving out the look of disgust.

loud pipes save lives.
This is how it is.

Remember that is why we say that loud pipes save lives!!!!

VERY TRUE IF YOU KNOW OR LOVE BIKERS, OR EVEN IF YOU DON'T, PLEASE READ!

I saw you, hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.
But, you didn't see me; put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.
I saw you; pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.
But, you didn't see me, playing Santa at the local mall.
I saw you; change your mind about going into the restaurant.
But, you didn't see me, attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.
I saw you, roll up your window and shake your head when I rode by.
But, you didn't see me, riding behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.
I saw you, frown at me when I smiled at your children.
But, you didn't see me, when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.
I saw you, stare at my long hair.
But, you didn't see me, and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.
I saw you; roll your eyes at our leather jackets and gloves.
But, you didn't see me, and my brothers donate our old ones to those that had none.
I saw you; look in fright at my tattoos.
But, you didn't see me, cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart.
I saw you, change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.
But, you didn't see me, going home to be with my family.
I saw you, complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.
But, you didn't see me, when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.
I saw you, yelling at your kids in the car.
But, you didn't see me; pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me.
I saw you, reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.
But, you didn't see me; squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.
I saw you, race down the road in the rain.
But, you didn't see me, get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.
I saw you; run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.
But, you didn't see me, trying to turn right.
I saw you; cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.
But, you didn't see me, leave the road. I saw you, waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.
But, you didn't see me.
I wasn't there.
I saw you; go home to your family.
But, you didn't see me.
Because, I died that day you cut me off.
I was just a biker.
A person with friends and a family.
But, you didn't see me.

While I'm glad I mad emy point, I 'm at the same time ashamed I steotyped bikers so badly.

Perhaps a betterexample would be...

If you went into a shop carrying a loaded gun in full veiw of the shopkeeper and other customers whle buying your groceries and still proceeed to pay at counter.

What od you think would happen?

How do think a unformed cop as to opposed to person who is dresssed as a stereotyped outlaw ( As opposed person like your self who is a member of a biker club.) would be treated in the same situation?.

You know that the person with the loaded weapon is either going to be given a wide berth or the shopkeeepr might also be pointing a gun back at them. Chances are that person will not be short changed if they intend on paying.

It would be most likely that the uniformed cop is going to be treated with respect. Why? because it would be silly not to. Unless that paritcular cop is known to be corrupt or incompetant. Thne the uniform might not make much difference, thought the loaded weapon in their holster probably will. Depneds on the level of crime where the shop is. I guess.

Of course this could all be roleplayed dfifferently.

loud pipes save lives.

What does that mean exactly?

It's obvious you have lost some people close to you within your biker community. My condolaneces., but lets stay on topic.

Very interesting points and well thought through.

Loud pipes save lives, means loud exhausts can be heard by people and less likely to look for the sound therefore cutting down risks to all road users.

Gavinwulf,
Whether or not all the able bodied men are warriors or not would probably depend on the situation. If in defence of their hearth and home, then all able bodied men and many of the women would be warriors.
If on a cattle raid or going to battle against some enemy, I would say that each village would have a warrior elite cadre. This would be the job of these warriors. Young men from crafting, herding and farming backgrounds with warrior aspirations would probably tag along. Only if there was an entire tribal muster would every able bodied man be expected to turn up(with the last one arriving being sacrificed to the Goddess).
From the tribal musters in Way of the Horned Lord, I take it that there is one professional warrior for every ten part time warriors in any settlement.
In the old D20 Slaine they were differentiated as Noble Warriors and Tribal Warriors and had different progression charts.
These are, of course, just my thoughts on the subject.
