first game impressions......

Mongoose
Played my first few games yesterday, me using a justice dept gang my mate was using a lone vigilante.

1st game, lone vigilante ( industrial action man) takes a critical hit from a widowmaker....dies
every game after that, he proceeds to chop my gang down, as my mate retooled him into a killing machine, with an energy shield.

Overall I love the game, its fast, brutal, and finally its judge dredd.

I do however, have a question, I know heros cant be arrested, but the judges still have to try, whats the reasoning behind this?..

A ywho, with us now knowing how to play, were gonna start a campaign in the new year!!

Judges can't just gun down everyone because they're law enforcement agents. Just because the perp will resist arrest doesn't mean you don't have to try. It's different with robots, zombies and communists, because they're not really people, and aren't bound by the same laws.

Thats understandable, I guess, which leads me onto my next question, if your on alert status, can you use that one action to try and arrest?

I've seen nothing to suggest you can't! Other awesome ones involve spending an alert action to set up a Complex Weapon and (one that I want to try woth a zombie horde...) going onto Alert with a whole mob then daring the opponent's melee dudes to charge you :D

you can use any special action including arrest..however readying a complex weapon would be kinda pointless as you have to ready the weapon immediately before shooting...they cannot be carried over

More than just the background reasoning, I think it's a balance device. A Street Judge is actually pretty cheap for what you get at 150 credits; Judges get +1's across the board, excellent equipment and their own set of talents. One tradeoff for having such a tooled-up character for a reasonably low cost is that sometimes you have to let your opponent's heroes and heavy weapons get the drop on you.
