Firefly RPG

I have it.

It's... OK. The system is a bit weird, and the book isn't that well laid out.

The thing that gets me is that the books that were supposed to have come out after it haven't.

But I was talking with a local game shop owner today, they sell. Very, very well!

But noone's heard of anyone that runs a game of it.

That's really interesting. I'm a huge fan of the series and the film but just couldn't bring myself to buy the game. Recently I saw the game at Borders and flipped through it and liked what I saw. I may try and pick it up used...

Most store owners will tell ya something is a great seller to get you to buy it...

Will check it out.... Found a friend who has it. He says it is OK...

No, I've seen it jump from the shelves.

Was a royal pain to get my own copy, let me tell you.

So it's not a fib, it *IS* a good buy, and worth the price for what's in it.

System just is a bit... Odd, is all. Lack of enough examples and a Character Sheet are really telling, however.

Actually they never had permission to put out more than the core book, Screen and the adventure from Universal. Recently Jamie Chambers (writer) has said they are trying to get permission to put out more books. They also have Battlestar Galactica and Supernatural as gaming licences. They have revamped the cortex system (their name for it) and it runs smoother. We will see. :) rpg.net has a several threads on it.

Theres a supernatural rpg? Awesome. I only saw one episode but it rocks. Is it in development or is it actually released? Any ideas on the system?

There was another thing they released last year at GenCon Indy. I know I picked it up, but I don't remember the name. It's back at the apartment on top of the rest of Serenity RPG material. It was an adventure.

I have the Serenity RPG and it has big problems. The system itself is not bad, indeed is quite clever and would be nice – if they had finished writing it. Combat however is a disaster, a confused and unplayable nightmare that seems to combine at least two different versions and some very dodgy ideas.

The background section is quite well done, though some of the assumptions are questionable (such as Inara's use of a shuttle as being normal as opposed to the exception that it seems to be from a recent re-watching of the series). The Starship section is again a mixed bag, it was written by a Traveller gearhead and is very good on the background and how things work but the ship designs do not match the design rules and at least one of the designs is based on a very dubious assumption – basically a Conestoga settler ship, I cannot see how this is either economically viable or how it can be derived from the background.

It is a very pretty book as well, I did not like some of the illustrations but most of the pictures are from the film. The deckplans are quite pretty but as a gear head I would quibble with them.

In short it would have been a nice game had they ever finished writing it but instead it has probably the worst editing errors of any RPG I have ever seen. It seems to have been released far too prematurely. With the authors now working on the BSG game which has the same system it looks as if you will have to buy that to see a finished version of the system.

Watch the series and you can run a better game using your own favourite system, I was able to knock together a useable and not inaccurate background after watching my first episode of the series (Train Job I think) filling in the background from what I knew of the ACW, western history and SF in general.

I am quite looking forward to the Mongoose SF version of Runequest for this purpose. I had been thinking of running Star Wars as well and it would have drawn very heavily on Firefly for inspiration though of course Firefly itself is very reminiscent of Traveller. Oddly a recent Wild West game seems to show some Firefly influence so it goes both ways.

Honestly, I was asked to run Serenity at a local con, but I was thinking of using a different rules set (runequest was the first I could think of).

I run an online game via OpenRPG on Wednesday nights, been going on a year now. I'm running the current storyline as a tournament event for Dragon*Con 2007.

I'm very new to all of this, but is it possible that Starship Troopers could be expanded to include Firefly-like elements?

I know that sounds silly, but I'm just wondering aloud.
