Fiction recommendations?

Can anyone recommend some good fiction or fan fiction set in the Traveller universe? I found a few short stories at fanfiction.com, but not too much else. Or even novels that are pretty close to Traveller? I'd love to read some as inspiration and as a way to understand the setting history/background.

You can find a list of some Traveller novels on the Wiki entry for Traveller:

Finding the actual print novels will be a little rougher. There's probably some good fanfic out there if you look for it.

Fantastic! That is exactly what I was looking for. Have already purchased the Kindle version of The Backwards Mask. Thanks again!

For a Golden Age novel, may I suggest Martin Dougherty's "Shadow of the Storm".

It takes place in the Solomani Confederacy at about the current (1105 Imperial) timeline.

For a series of novels that are close to Traveller, I recommend the Dumarest of Terra series by E. C. Tubb. These are especially good if you are interested in shipless travellers who go from one passage to the next.

Andre Norton's Solar Queen series is also a big influence on Traveller (and probably through Traveller, Firefly): http://www.goodreads.com/series/58108-solar-queen

For some inspiration on small commercial starship ops - Peter F Hamiltons 'Nights Dawn' series, also has some interesting worlds in there.

CJ Cherryh is also good for alien cultures/attitudes (esp. Aslan) and small commercial ships in the Chanur series, also the Company Wars series are very good for inspiration. Not always the easiest author to read, though.

There's also Space Viking, by H Beam Piper, which gives some of the history of the Sword Worlders, though the setting has them raiding the Imperium-equivalent in their timeline. :)

It's available for free at Project Gutenberg:

Good luck finding these in bookstores though!

The entire series is available on Amazon for ebooks!

Traveller's origins are literary, but it has had relatively little of its own literature over the years, unless you count a lot of the fluff as "in universe".

SF that inspired, or was inspired by, or is simply inspiring to, Traveller is a much longer list, and is different for every player. My own list is around here somewhere...

You speak to someone who doesn't have and also refuses to get an ereader!
