And it looks like as a group we're pretty consistent about what we consider the best.

Sorry that everyone else is wrong ;) I just feel that episode summed up for me what B5 was all about.... it wasn't about the space battles so much as the personal stories.

Well I gave that episode my "Honorable Mention" since it was my second favorite episode. :D

One of the core arcs in B5 is the relationship between Londo and G'Kar, and how over the course of the series they trade places as to how they are presented to the viewers (i.e. good/evil).

I was more interested in seeing the relationship evolve between these two characters than I was the Sinclair (passed to Sheridan) / Delenn relationship. Seeing how Londo and G'Kar both met their end was the perfect climax to their conjoined fate. Also, don't forget that the fate of those two was just a down payment on the larger fate of even both species. In season 1 Kosh and Sinclair say-

K: They are alone. They are a dying people. We should let them pass.
S: Who, the Narn or the Centauri?
K: Yes.

Downright creepy. Little do Londo and G'Kar know that their personal fate is also the fate of both of their races.

So I know what you mean, cordas. I see the show both as a very well thought out story and also as a great platform for starship battle special effects. I'd say that from some of the opinions of the show here that there is definately a perspective of why those same people play the MGP game and would rate the episodes in a different order. :D

Of course the Vorlons have been wrong before. It's quite possible that the Narn and/or Centauri will survive and thrive. Granted I don't have a lot of hope, especially in the Centauri's case(at least the Narn seem to have the capacity to honestly look at other species as allies and friends where the Centauri can't even manage that much) but it's possible.

Yes, it is possible. But the Vorlons know the past and the future and how it happens in a big circle. My own hope is that like you the Narn would find a way to escape their destined fate, with G'Kar being the one that changes their destiny. But first, the Narns have to replace their telepaths, heh. First things first.

JMS conciders the 2 race de facto doomed...So I figure it can be concidered canonical that they are doomed to evolutional dead end.

Spoiler! Yeah, enough hints are dropped throughout the series as to their intended fate. Still, JMS teases us with G'Kar seeing a way out for his people, but I guess what must happen is that they did not listen to him. :(

Of course it's never made "official" and some hints are offered that they might be lead out of their dead ends(G'Kar, whatshisname with the sword, and Vir) so it's safe to say while odds are against them they do have hope.

JMS said they don't go on to become "first ones" in the way Humans and Minbari do, but they do survive.

G'Kar and Londo's actions do ultimately save them I felt. As for the Centauri not having any redeeming features, I'd say that under Vir Cotto the Centauri become rehabilitated

I very much like all of what you said of how JMS explained the Narn and Centauri's fate. I see that it can be a method of resolving the Centauri/Narn canon without having them go extinct.

In a twist of wry humor (my normal mode), this can also explain the SST name of "Forth". If B5 has the First Ones, with the Minbari and Humans becoming "Second Ones", why can't the SST universe have something called the "Forth Ones".

There's no question in my mind about the best episode. The Long Twilight Struggle at the end of Season 2 where the Centauri Republic finally crushes the Narn Regime is just great.

This is a very good episode. One of the reasons that I like it is that the battle highlights one of the selling points of B5 for me. The fact that there are large (sometimes huge) technological disparities between a lot of the races. Up until B5 I'd mostly watched startrek, and the next generation, and there never seemed to be that much difference between the hardware each race had. The B5 model of having races at various stages on the technology ladder always seems a lot more logical, and likely.

Don't drag that arguement here, or I will hunt you down and beat you to death with a week dead halibut.

If you look at the Narn and Centari story arc it starts in the pilot, but the 1st epsiode of the Show is entirely about it, this story then runs right until the end of the show, no other story arc does this.

JMS himself has said that B5 is really Londo's story more than any other characters, as he makes the most complete journey, and of course G'kar is an integral part of that. And the Rock Cried Out is one of the defining points in Londo's story.

One of my favorite episodes is when G'kar and Londo are stuck in the elevator together after the terrorist attack. Priceless.

In no particular order:

Into the Fire - Surprised noone's said this yet (though I suppose someone mentioned 'when morden gets it' :P

Severed Dreams - Big Fight and the big turning point for the station

The Long Twilight Struggle - The Fall of Narn and the first BIG shadow fight

Engame - For the ending alone its just stunning

On the hope for the Narn/Centauri thing...

first - JMS is not without the occasional bit of revision to his story arcs...so always hope.

second - not all the first ones went on to become energy beings...the Lordship fellows were still solid beings...just really really scary advanced one...maybe the Narn could go that route.

third - prophecy is always a chancy game...even for authors...=)

Severed Dreams but not by much :)

Favourite episodes by season:

Signs and Portents
The Long Twilight Struggle
Severed Dreams
The Long Night
All My Dreams Torn Asunder

It's a shame season 5 didn't start that well as it had a really strong finish and could have been the best of all the seasons with a little EA civil war at the start and the telepath stuff spread out more.

My favourite moments in the series do tend to be the more comedic ones.
I especially enjoy the various exchanges between Londo & other characters:
'Those earth creatures, webbed feet, go quack'
'Cats!'

Londo hunting down bugs in his room

The technomages punishing Londo with Narn opera and 'gremlins'.

And Marcus wasting an entire bar of people while searching for Delenn and ending up with him punching the last guy out and going 'Bugger, now I've got to wait for one of them to wake up'.
