Examples of Play

I am still in the long prep and learning phase before I start to run my first game of traveller, and I think I have most of the important things down.

However, just to really grind it in I would love to look at any full examples of play. Do any of you have transcripts from games of traveller? I would really love it if I could read through them and see how they play out. Combat / Doing stuff in ships / space combat would all especially be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Here are a few guidelines that I adhere to:-

Keep it simple
=========
* Use other people's scenarios (e.g. Beltstrike, Prison Planet)
* Use other people's backgrounds (e.g. Spinward Marches)

Know your stuff
==========
* Know your rules - initially only a subset of the core rulebook
* Know the scenario that you are about to run well - and make notes and maybe charts and diagrams to ensure the smooth running of the game

Keep it active
=========
* Try to find out what your players like - and provide it :)
* I use a mixture of action (dice rolling) and investigation

While I appreciate the advice Ian, it is really not what I was asking for.

I was looking for an actual transcription of an actual game from someone who plays online or something.

I have been DMing for years, so the general 'preparedness' and game running skills are fully ingrained.

I just want to see traveller in action to finalize my rules knowledge.

What you are asking for is called PbP (Play by Post). I have not seen any on this forum, but there are several around.

Also on CotI there is several individuals who do post their play sessions besides some PbP games.

Actual transcripts is bit much and I have only known 1 player my entire life who actually took the time to write down everything that happened in game sessions.

Dave, thanks. I was more talking about transcripts from IRC games. That way its not play-by-post (which usually unfolds a bit differently from an actual game in my experience).

I play a lot of games over IRC and I know a lot of other people do to. That, or something like it was basically what I was asking for. Though I will check out the play-by-post stuff you suggested.

That's harder than it sounds....

I'm currently running a game on Skype/ Screenmonkey, with Skype doing most of the work (we really use SM for images / maps and any dice rolling needed. Most of the game (as you know) is done by voice.

Not having done anything by PbP, I can tell that the current set up is almost like a "live game", with interaction between the players, sotto voci (or not) and myself, but a true transcript would be hard (and in some cases a bit bizarre if you didn't know the players backgrounds).

Good luck to you though.

Take care
