Example animals to help with creature creation

I'm reading the CRB's Encounters and Dangers chapter and I'd like a bit of help with the size table on page 71. It lists size from 1 to 13

Size, Weight (Kg)
1, 1
2, 3
3, 6
4, 12
5, 25
6, 50
7, 100
8, 200
9, 400
10, 800
11, 1600
12, 3200
13, 5000

In particular I would appreciate a suggestion linking a particular weight to an example creature on planet Earth.

Thank you :D

Here are a few quickies, off the top of my head:

Goat/Sheep: 100 kg

Cow: 400 kg

Horse: 800 kg

Wolf/Dog: 1kg to 50 kg (average out about 25 kg for a German Shepherd, 12 kg for a "dingo")

Rabbit: 3 kg

Cat: 3 kg

Eagle: 3 kg

BIG rat: 1 kg

Elephant: 3,500 kg (African Male)

Blue Whale: 18,000 kg

Hope that helps!

Some more real world data from a zoo:

African elephant 8,500 lbs.
African hunting dog 27 kg
Baird’s tapir 200 kg
Bison 670 kg
Chimpanzee 52 kg
Grevy’s zebra 408 kg
Grizzly bear 531 lbs.
African lion (male) 440 lbs.
Ring-tailed lemur 9 lbs.
Wallaroo 82 lbs.
Bald eagle 11 lbs.
Black swan 9 kg
Brush turkey 2 kg
Double-wattled cassowary 22 lbs.
Emu 110 lbs.
Lappet-faced vulture 7 kg
Roseate spoonbill 3.2 lbs.
Scarlet macaw 2 lbs.
Spectacled owl 1.5 lbs.
Trumpeter swan 11 kg
Aldabra tortoise 136 kg
Beaded lizard 2.5 kg
Gila monster 3.25 lbs.
Komodo dragon 200 lbs.
Madagascar tree boa 10 lbs.

I think you will find African elephants range from 3500kg up to around 10000kg (largest ever found was 10,900kg) and Asian elephants range from 3000-5500kg so they can go up to larger than double the maximum Traveller animal size allowance (which is why I have extended my own animal table considerably - see my other animal encounter posts for details). Crazy to have the largest alien animal available in Traveller smaller than the average elephant!

Classic Traveller was far more imaginative in its sizing - it went up to 32,000kg if I remember correctly? My own MGT table now goes up to 180,000kg which allows for animals larger than the largest ever earth animal - the blue whale - pretty likely I would think on a low-G world.

I always liked the animal stats from "Nomads of the World Ocean":

Daghadadede 150,000,000kg 2030/900 battle 800 thrasher F12 A12 S0

Here's what I changed my CRB/Animal Encounters books.

1. p6 "Determine Behaviour Model" The behaviour models lack Terran equivalents. They can be found on p71 of the CRB.

2. p21 "Numerical details" pencilled in equivalents as listed prior in this message thread.

3. p21 Column "Size", Row "6" has 4d6 Dex where it should be 3d6 Dex. That error also occurs on p71 CRB

Additional Note: Animal Behaviour Sheet (at the back of Animal Encounters Book) is missing entries for Size, Weight.

HTH,

Ian
