Evo: Modern Combat RPG

Mongoose
It's a license of your own design with a lot of untapped potential in a relatively dry niche. Sure there's GURPS Spec Ops, and Blood and Guts d20, but the thing is, those games suck for storytelling. They get bogged down in rules lawyering and other such tripe. You guys remember RECON? It was an awesome roleplaying game. The only thing that sucked was that you couldn't really go outside of Vietnam. This could be a rules-light, fast-paced, fun, and gritty game of combat in the modern world.

That is what "military" rpgs are missing these days. The ability to drink beer and eat pretzels while weaving great tales of battle.

Oh yeah, and it has to have room for skill growth but not enough for power gaming..

I second this!

Something like this would be awesome. Twilight:2013 could be turned to something like this but I'm afraid that it is not as light a game as Recon is/was (yes, I own that, too).

I have this Deluxe Recon and it had some pointers for a mercenary game and was thus not geared only towards Viet Nam war with the extra material.

Another good example of light combat oriented game is Merc.

Well. Traveller is pretty lightweight ruleset and is pretty adaptable as well(I'm working for sword&sorcery supplement for it and so far seems to be working). If Mongoose doesn't release it you could do suitable rules(though obviously you need to avoid Evo: MC trademark but present-near future RPG shouldn't be hard to make without breaking trademarks and while allowing the use of rules in Evo: MC setting) and release them yourself(since Traveller rules are open).

Compared to S&S that's even pretty lightweight conversion.

Well, I just had a brainstorm with my friends the other day and I have no plans to start developing a game of my own. I just know what I'd like to see in a game, and Traveller wouldn't be a bad idea as far as a system for it. I would kinda like to see Mongoose make their own system for it though that way the translation of RPG to minis game would be seamless for large scale battles. I just think this is something MGP should look into.

BTW, wasn't there an S&P about someone making "heroic" type characters for EVO? Can't remember exactly what it was, but that was certainly one of the things that helped spawn this idea.

I always said the one thing I didn't like about Wraith Recon was the magic based setting, put it in the real world and I'd buy it

LBH

I know what ya mean, LBH. I'm not gonna rail on WR as I haven't played it, but I've been done with fantasy gaming for well over a year now. Not knocking fantasy players, I'm just ready for a really good modern/post-modern military adventure game. Being able to work in a good skirmish with the EVO minis would just be a great plus.

Personally I like the idea of Wraith Recon but D&D engine is just not for me. Still, personally I prefer modern/ultra-modern settings. Being able to fuse the minis game and RPG would be a huge bonus, to me.

Well. Traveller could do pretty well in modern/ultra-modern setting. What you need is just new careers(which can be almost copy&pasted from official ones with just a bit of tweaking for fluff text) and removing high TL stuff from the mix and add new low-TL(ie current) tech weapons into the mix.

If Mongoose doesn't do it maybe someone has time for it. Shouldn't be that lengthy process. Traveller is pretty easy system to mod and this isn't that far from Traveller to begin with.

If I wasn't in the middle of one project already nevermind bachelor's thesis I might do it myself. Give me time to finish those two and I'll see if I can do this one as well if no-one has done that by then ;-)
