Essential Traveller for Firefly/Serenity Campaign

I've just bought (but not yet received) the core rulebook and will be planning to use it for a Firefly/Serenity campaign. I was just musing on the myriad of supplements produced for Traveller and wondered which (if any) would be essential/suitable for roleplaying in the 'verse?

I'd wait until you've read through the core rulebook before looking at supplements. You might find it has everything you need. It all depends upon whether you prefer to invent your own background material for the 'verse or if you're looking to use an established background such as the Spinward Marches.

I have oodles of background material on the 'verse, including the official Serenity RPG, so from that perspective I'm good :)

You might find some useful stuffs in Dilettante. Merchant Prince & Scoundrel would be my other choices. The rest wouldn't seem to relate so much...

Yeah, agreed.

Frankly, with your oodles of backgroud material, you probably already have enough when you get a core rulebook. You might find the Central Supply Catalogue, with its wider range of weapons, of interest.

Serenity/Firefly is a TL10 setting (though the vacc suits seem to be at TL12 standard) including grav control, so leave out some armours, e.g. ablat, reflet, combat armour and battle dress, but allow TL10 cloth, allow all TL10 weapons, including TL9 energy weapons, but make the latter expensive and rare. There is no jump drive in the series, but I would be inclined to remodel things slightly and introduce Traveller type jump drive, which will make your 'verse a big bigger. I suggest that you create worlds rather than using the random generation, as the firefly verse seems to have a large number of planets with terra style grav and atmospherices (the film suggest widespread terra forming). TL in many of the fringe worlds likely to be 4 or 5, and population seems low outside the core worlds, but that is all in keeping with the frontire spirit of the series ("go west, young Mal, and east and north and south and up and down, hey, just go")

Firefly always looked to me like someone's Traveller campaign diary, so I hope the background and system works well for you!

Thanks for the feedback everyone :)

Sounds like I just need to be patient and see what's covered in the core rulebook - hopefully everything I need!

You can get the developers pack which contains the open source rules and the bulk of core to read if you are anxious - http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/travdevpack.zip

You really can't go wrong with Scoundrel. It covers all the "other stuff" the crew of the Serenity tends to get tangled up with and in some detail.

I'd usually recommend 760 Patrons and 1001 Characters too but they're really tilted to fit the core 3I setting. That would work great for a campaign in the Core, similar types like bureaucrats or hardened professional mercs but less so further out where the stereotypes tend to be less "modern" and more Victorian, Asian or Old West in nature. You could adapt them, I suppose, but it might be just as easy to make them yourself based on NPCs in the Firefly RPG material.
