Earthsea?

The King

Cosmic Mongoose
I already proposed this one sometimes ago and I'd still like to play some games in this setting because the poetic feeling is really stunning. May be with the Runequest rules.

Any supporters?

The major problem I believe is that Ursula LeGuinn was quite displeased with the movie and I fear it would be hard to have a licence for an RPG. But if Mongoose gives warranty it could be an excellent production and give us the possibility to know better about her world.

I have not seen the animation movie but I saw a review at the TV and no wonder if she didn't feel too good about it. To my understanding the movie didn't have much in common with the books and probably took too much influence in Japanese culture while the books are definitely written in European/Western culture in mind.

There is a fifth book in the series that is actually an anthology of short stories. I have understood that it has more info about the world but so far I have not had time to read it.

I saw both the TV movie (in 2 parts) and the animation movie.
The later is typical Japanese, with lots of thoughts and inner reflection, even to the point of being boring sometimes. There was however the poetry inherent to Earthsea. It took some ideas from the 3rd and 4th book but that connexion was very loosely adapted.

In this, the TV movie was much more faithful of the books, at least at the beginning, and the first part was truly excellent and in tune with the books IMO and was very reminiscent of the first book (that is the apprenticeship of a wizard and the price of showing too much pride). The second part happened on the isle of Atuan (and the famous labyrinth where Ged spent a lot of times in the 2nd book).
The movie gives an sort of answer to what are the being worshipped on Atuan and the movie made them like demons crossing a planar gate. The way the whole thing was brought was a bit ridiculous but on the whole I found the movie quite entertaining and the 1st part excellent (including the FX) and Kristin Kreuk is just lovely.

Here are some comments of Ursula Le Guin on the movie: http://www.ursulakleguin.com/Earthsea.html and

Earthsea fan too :) I don't know how well the setting's atmosphere could be conveyed in an rpg though. But as a fantasy setting in general it would work well, especially for GM's. Thousands of islands, each different, dragons, magick, its all there.
I fear an attempt to make it into an RPG would lose a lot of flavour though.
