DBC?

It is true then...

DBC, excellent contribution you've made to the game...shame your off

Good Luck in Scandinavia

Just like to add my regrets to the rest at DBC saying farewell, but you have to go where the money is (sadly).
Anyway best of luck in the Frozen North

You must not have read all thecritics on the RQ forum then.

Can you give a link to any particular thread?
I can't. It has possibly been deleted or perhaps it's just a post that I read.

Actually I didn't post much on the RQ/Glorantha forum until MoG was released because I was very interested in how heroquests were handled and read the other threads very rapidly.

Before we had the MoB standard, now we have the MoG.

I always think that you should go with what makes you happy (if you are willing to try hard enough).

Me, money doesn't make me happy.

That just means you have enough.

Funcom is BIG, and Age of Conan is to be their new flagship. Don't think we will see him for a while, especially as the pay was a lot better too.

Underpayed and overworked employees might be good for buisness, but it's certainly bad for the game.

Sadly the Pen & Paper Games Market has never really provided substantial rates of pay and I don't see that changing anytime soon. It is possible to subsidise writing off the back of CCGs to a certain degree (or if you have a higher sense of morals, selling crack to kids at primary school) but the big bucks ain't really there.

Someone linked me to this thread. I didn't believe them when they told me at first.

Heard a foul rumour that Aaron has left Mongoose to seek his fortune, can it be true? (And we never got see him eat a mug)

I'll still do that if you like. Food is so expensive in Oslo, it'll probably come to eating my mug collection at some point.

I'll guess the heroquest GL raiding scenario is out the window, but Clanking City and Guide to Uz, are they finished? Anyone who knows?

They're finished. I'm as proud of Clanking City as anything I've ever done. A lot of love went into that book, and I grinned like you wouldn't believe when I got an email from Greg Stafford saying he liked the parts I'd showed him and he'd put a few of the characters into his own current HeroQuest work. That raged.

Perhaps he couldn't also support the constant critics on his alleged lack of Gloranthan knowledge. If he was no expert (everyone needs some time febore being expert in anything) I appreciated his works.

I did pretty well, all said. Most people who've been mean to me here are mean to me because I come across like a dick, not because they think my writing sucks. I won't lie, I'm not one of those guys who can shrug off negativity if I perceive it to be invalid, so I've avoided this place at times. (Of course, I'm down with a lot of the various criticism being perfectly valid, too.) But overall, the forum and the people here were immensely helpful, useful and decent folks who I'm glad I rubbed shoulders with. I can think of several I imagine I'll be keeping in contact with.

Good luck DBC, we'll miss ya!

Thanks, dude. Been having a bit of a heavy, busy day, so that cheered me up a bunch. :)

Didn't he mention in his blog, that he might do some more writing for the Mongoose maybe as a free lance kind of thing?

I'd quite like to do that, yeah. A lot depends on how I end my tenure, though. The clock is ticking on a massive project that I'm struggling to find the time to finish because of the 'getting ready' chaos, and if I drop the ball, Mongoose have every right to be pissed off about it and tell me to get lost if I come asking for freelance work in a few months.

That said, I'd really like to write Blood of Orlanth, still.

Bry and Gar (the other 2 staff writers) earn a lot more than me as they're much, much more experienced than I am, and with published credits you could choke whales with. I didn't earn much because A) RPG writing pays peanuts, and B) I'm technically a newbie. My resume' is kinda prestigious, but not expansive, if you get me.

If I ever moved to Scandinavia it wouldn't be for the wanga but for the babes.

A creed to live by. It's the magic moments like this that I'll miss most.

Again, honestly, I appreciate the hell out of you saying that, Ex.

The money was a big part, but there are a bunch of factors. Mostly I wanted to stagger out into a blizzard, collapse, and say "Yoda...Dagobah system...Ben!"

No. No, I'm not kidding. I'm doing that the very second I first see some serious snowfall. And when the Norwegian paramedics come save me, I'll be sat in the back of the ambulance, looking out of the window and making snowspeeder noises.

Me, money doesn't make me happy.

Me either. I'm 26 and every single job I've had has paid, say, 1/3 of what one of my parents' will earn in a year; they're police officers, and we all know they're not exactly paid in liquid gold. For the past 4 years since uni, I've been earning about half to two-thirds of what all my friends earn, even those in pretty unskilled office jobs. But I've had some great jobs and they've kept me very happy.

That said, I'm 26 and I have no savings, no car and no house. I'd kinda like to change at least one of those three things in 2007. There's also the fact that this move frees up a great deal of time for me to focus on writing novels (my primary ambition) and it's a hell of an adventure to a workplace I loved last time I was there.

That, and the vigour with which they pursued me was, frankly, staggering and totally flattering.

ok dudes I'm going to have to resolve some of these money worries you're all having. Money does not make you happy. Skirt makes you happy. The former is useful in helping you obtain the latter but by NO MEANS neccessary.

True. I suckered my girlfriend in through a combination of charm and secret military-grade hypnosis. And she, as I often announce to random strangers in a rather crass display of personal pettiness, is a total hottie.

The "Darn" above was short for:

"Hot damn but you will be missed man!"

Your glorantha writing has been excellent, and I hope you'll find time and energy for freelancing. Heck, I hope you'll find time and opportunity to roleplay there in Norway! Run a Glorantha game or something. Something grim and epic in the clancking city. I'd travel a long way for that myself.

PS. I hope this doesn't mess things up with your girlfriend. Ultimately no job is worth that.

Congrats. You've made your bones, m'man.

There's no way out for you now except feet first. You're a made man. ;) Sometime, I still think I'd like to share a gig with you.

Jeff

P.S. Having stuff adopted by Greg IS a kick, innit?

I make church mice look like Bill Gates :) But you are right.

I hope things work out for you in the frozen north DBC (I do envy you the cold though, I love it) and that you get the balance right. Hope you can get some good roleplaying in.

This feels a tad uncomfortable to me, there are few women roleplayers as it is, fake or real sexism isn't going to encourage more of them to get or to continue to be involved. And there are (young) readers who may not know the difference and think sexism is OK.

Seconded. I didn't want to say anything because I could tell that was meant as "brotherly horseplay".

It still rubbed me the wrong way. If one must cling to medieval sexist attitudes, one should go to Afganistan and join the Taleban. :(

It does feel like this forum is almost exclusively male. That's very unfortunate. I wonder what it means about MRQ's target demographic?

One thing still Aaron.

I can't believe what a fast writer you are!!! The sheer volume of material you seem to have written up is staggering. While I occasionally think I could write pretty good stuff myself, it would take me six years to do what you've done in six months!

My hat is off to you,

-Adept
