Davy Crockett - King of the wild frontier?

I believe the Davy Crockett was a contact nuke, which is the 2nd dirtiest version of a nuke.

It was a radar proximity fused weapon. The intended use was a air burst so as to take out as many soviet tanks as possible over a broad area.

Another option was the an actual suitcase (or backpack) nuke that troops were infiltrated into the Warsaw Pact rear area to blow up communications and command centres.

And of course, atomic mines in transport bottlenecks.

Back pack nuke had the same warhead, and these were dirty weapons to be used in the Fulda Gap.

Yep. They really were designed as a last resort (short of strategic nuke war) to stop the hordes of Eastern Bloc tanks from pouring through and "breaking out".

"where would you use a Davy Crockett in your Traveller Adventure?"

Somewhere the Imperium isn't going to discover. Those pocket nukes are a real slippery slope Pandora's box. If the first one was so easy and effective, why not use more? Ever notice military targets escalate to civilian ones when things thing start to go bad?

Only place that might get a green light is an out of control chamax infestation.

The M-28 or M-29 Davy Crockett Weapon System(s) was a tactical nuclear recoilless gun (smoothbore) for firing the M-388 nuclear projectile that was deployed by the United States during the Cold War.

Hrmm ... stats 2-4km range, but: Both recoilless guns proved to have poor accuracy in testing, so the shell's greatest effect would have been its extreme radiation hazard.

The M-388 would produce an almost instantly lethal radiation dosage (in excess of 10,000 rem) within 500 feet (150 m), and a probably fatal dose (around 600 rem) within a quarter mile (400 m).

Ouch.

Never, ever, tell your players about this.

Kilt him a (Russian) Bar, when he was only three.

Esp when they are firing crazy inaccurate nukes like that, it should have been called the Wile E. Coyote.

I do not think any solder from North America would be dumb enough to actually fire any weapon named the Wile E. Coyote, even under direct orders to do so. Orders for suicide do not have to be followed, at least not in North America.
