Couple of dumb simple rules questions

1) Can you field fighters that are not carried on a mothership, I can't see anything in the rules that says not, if there is someone please point me at it.

2) A Burnout, Multihit N weapon takes down N shields with each successful hit doesn't it?

Thanks all, still wrapping my head round the rules, liking them very much.

About Question 1:

I thought there was a blerb in one of the Sighs and Portents that independent fighters were no longer part of the game, unfortunately I don't have a rule book to confirm this with.

Regarding question 2:

I have been under the impression that Burnout only degrades your opponents shield by 1 point. After all the EMP Gun has the Double Burn rule, which is the only rule I know of stipulating multiple damage to shields.

Hopefully Matt can give us a definitive answer

On 2) from the rules

Burn-out: These weapons are designed to fry shield emitters. A
Burn-out weapon striking a shield will disable it. Deduct a Shield
from the target ship for every Burn-out hit it sustains.

AND

Multihit X: Some weapons are extremely powerful and whether
through raking fire or huge explosions, they can cause immense
amounts of damage. For every successful Attack Dice this weapon
system has in an attack, it will deal a number of hits equal to its
Multihit score.

SO every Burn-Out hit drops a shield, and every Multi-Hit X weapon causes X hits per die, therefore it seems to me that Burn-Out, Multi-Hit X drops X Shields, but I want to clarify.

I'm pretty sure that's how we were playing it at the Open Day on Saturday.

I agree, this is a classic case of needing better rule clarity. Personally I think it would be much more interesting if every hit reduced the shields by 1. Else the first Heavy Blaster hit is going to completely strip most ships of their shields. This would mean using lighter weapons against a ship would be preferable until the units shields are gone.

But anyway, Yes we need a clarification here.

I found the answer to 1), P. 88 of the rules, you can only carry fighters on ships with the Carrier trait, and you can't carry more than the specified number.

I suspect this might change in future in the event some ships get fighters but are not Carrier, or we'll see ships with Carrier 1, but anyway, the answer no fighters unless on a mothership.

LBH

That is right LBH, Fighters can only be used with a Carrier.

A multi hit 2 weapon will do 2 off the Shields for every AD successfully hit the ship. The remainder going through as damage.

Thanks Matt, I found the answer to the fighter question in the rules after I emailed you last night, thanks for confirming the BurnOut Multihit N combo query.

I also noticed almost all weapons, except for fighters and most of the Al-Malik ships are either slow or BurnOut, so Burnout is almost the norm for weapons.

LBH

Yup, and almost every fleet uses either energy weapons with burnout, or slow weapons which ignore shields predominately, except for Al-Malik, just something I spotted today.

Frankly having now seen the ship lists I'm shocked how few slug-guns there are out there at least with the "Noble" fleets. I would have assumed that these weapons were cheaper to build and easier to maintain and therefore would be more plentiful. But perhaps they are simply the brutal kind of weapon only a savage unsophisticated kind of people use. So we shall see more of them from the Vuldrok.

Vuldrok can do some amazing things with Slug Guns. (No Spoilers for those who do not have the 2nd Ed Noble Armada).

Yes, burn out is pretty much the default.

There are a couple of Decados ships that have meson guns or slug guns.

The Kurgan, which we are playtesting now, don't have burn-out weapons.

For the current fleets, yes. In this rulebook we have set up quite a few things for the future. All will be revealed in the next few months :)
