Coronel battle report

Mongoose
We played this last night, and got a semi-historical result - both British heavy cruisers sunk, and the Glasgow and Otranto fled the scene after narrowly avoiding being crippled.
However, all 3 German light cruisers were crippled.
Game lasted about 2.5 hours

I think there's a problem with the way Casemated guns work in heavy weather; I think they would be better just getting -1 to their AD, because otherwise the 4 8.2" casemated guns on the Scharnhorst and Gneisnau are completely useless in this scenario; only one can fire in any given direction, so the halving means they never fire at all, which seems a bit harsh on the Germans.
Giving them a -1 would mean they would at least get used, even if they didn't do too much.

This game also featured our first ever torpedo hit - requiring a 5,6 followed by a 6. The victim was the Good Hope, which has poor subdivision, so suffered massive damage.

Steve,

two questions:
1. Did you find a model for the HMS Otranto? The best I can find is a generic British Armed Merchant Alcantara from Panzerschiffe.

2.

I am not sure that I understand the above quote. I re-read the rules and a casemated gun is halved and rounded up. In Scharnhorst/Gneisnau case it would only ever have 1 gun firing in any given direction anyway unless firing dead to port, Starboard, aft, or forward. So the net affect would be you would still have 1(.5 rounded up to 1) in any direction. If you did -1 then you would have zero.

From Page 15:
Casemate: ....when firing in bad weather only half the total attack Dice may be used (rounded up) due to waves impacting on the guns.

Again, I am new to these rules....am I missing something?

TIA,

Yes, Navwar make it in 1:3000.
It looks nothing like a generic armed merchant - it was a converted Cruise Ship.

2. Halving means either no fire at all (if you round down) or no effect (if you round up).
-1 to AD seems to be a better solution because it works for an odd number of guns.

Thanks for the reply!

I guess I will have to look at a Modification to a model or a proxy to get something that looks like the correct ship.

As for casemates I will just round up per the rules. I was just confused with your suggestion of -1 in this situation because Scharnhorst only get 1 AD and it would be 0 in this case. ;)

FYI, I sent you an e-mail based from your web site. If you can uplaod the other ship cards you have or e-mail them to me that would be very helpful. I really like your format. If I can find out wher you obtained the line drawings I can easliy make my own for other ships as well.

Thanks,
