Convoy duty

Has anyone played convoy duty?

It was one of the battles in our campaign last week and it seemed to be very difficult for the convoy to actually escape. In fact the defender won, but only because he destroyed a lot of the attackers before the convoy ships were finished.

I have never played it personally, but I have seen it played a few times,. seems a damn tough mission. it seems the best plan is to wipe out the attackers and hope to the gods that your convoy doesn't explode while you do it

There was a high priority one a while back with a Brakiri Force jumping in to attack a Narn Convoy. The Brakiri player was quite surprised to see a Ka'Bin'Tak and three Ka'Tan escorting the large convoy, and the Ka'Bin'Tak then proceeded to decimate the Two Kaliva and Two Halik's.

We went through the scenario's pretty methodically at one point trying to decide if we wanted to remove any of them from our campaign. Convoy duty seemed to work out for the defender just fine most of the time if you took lots of the smaller fast freighters and went all power to engines across the table.

In the times I have played it, it also usually works for the defender. The attacker can hit the convoy but most of your ships can make short work of his.

Played it the Once in our last campaign as the attacker, Early EA vs ISA, if I recall rightly I blew out the freighters although Burger might remember better than me, mostly due to 2 lucky crits on his whitestar I think.

Played it recently with a League force (mainly Drazi) vs Clarkist EA at Skirmish PL. All the freighters were scrap within 3 turns. I've never been able to win as the convoy escort. The freighters can't take much damage and the attackers usually concentrate on them and disengage as soon as they've scrapped them. Even a few fighter flights can kill one pretty quickly. And with the attackers coming on from either side on any turn it can be fairly easy to draw off escorts and hit the convoy when it's mostly undefended. It gets even worse for them if you've got long range ships like the Sagittarius to defend against.

Yeah your Sag's of doom just critted my WSC-2 to uselessness in 1 turn.

It is much better for the defender to kill the attacker, rather than try to escape with the civvy ships. Although, remember the civilians have guns and can do special orders (APTE, CAF, come about... CQ2 though) ;)

Is this where he rolls 6 hits, and then gets 5 crits. Then spends the rest of the game moaning, that his dice rolling is crap, even though Tank is averaging a 75% chance of scoring a crit with every die he hits with :P

Yeah well one of those dice wasn't a crit so I guess he was a little unlucky there...plus he didn't get 6/6 on the results for each crit! Well not all of them ;)

You lot are affecting my Karma you know!!!!! I hardly rolled any crits at the weekend, it was seriously depressing!!!!! You're giving my dice a complex!

Yeah, tell that to Adam. I am sure, he will say otherwise.

Escort duty's a nice mission.....The B5 furies will get a free round of fire as Eviscerator jumps in, and with veterans in starfuries against regulars in Delta-Vs inevitably wipe the floor with the Raider fighters, but then pretty swiftly be shot to **** by the Eviscerator's particle beam flak batteries. Had a try last night before the main game.....

Managed to get within one turn of escaping with the Eddings- Eviscerator only managed to fire its pulse batteries once, and thanks to a critical couldn't concentrate fire......only got a couple of hits.....and, inevitabley, got engines disabled on the one critical hit. Then proceded to blow the liner to bits over the subsequent two turns. Damn.

Good fun, though.
