Converting older Traveller to MGT

GamerDude

Cosmic Mongoose
I've got a bunch of CT and MT stuff I'd like to use in MGT (mostly adventures), and I'm wondering if anyone has done some work converting the older Traveller stuff to MGT.

Even just a set of guidelines so I can convert PCs and NPCs would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Here's what I've done after converting about 12 characters from both CT and MT. Everything is just my opinion of course but it seems to work.

Because of the use of characteristic-based modifiers, I found that lowering CT/MT skill levels by 1 is a pretty accurate conversion and characteristics require no changes.

Skills for weapons, vehicles, and aircraft was easy; just pick the appropriate MongTrav skill for each type the character knows and assign a skill level equal to the highest skill level minus 1. Keep in mind that if a skill has specialties, a character knows all of the specialties he hasn't selected at level 0.

I found some skills to be a bit more difficult to convert and I've listed how I've dealt with them below.

Archaic Weapons - Keep as is; Mercenary should cover this since the CT Mercenary did.

Disguise - a combination of Deception and Artist (Acting), I split the Disguise skill levels equally between the two.

Forensic = Investigate

Forgery in MongTrav is no longer a separate skill. I'm using a Deception roll to enable a second specialization roll under Art. For example, if a character is trying to falsify identification papers, a successful Deception roll would allow him to roll against Art (Printing) to complete the task. Forging a marble statue would require Deception and Art (Sculpting).

High G Environ can be considered an Athletics (Strength or Endurance) roll.

Intrusion can be a combination of Deception, Engineer (Electronics), Mechanic, and Recon in the same way Forgery has been split up. Use Recon to spot security system details, Deception for picking pockets, and Electronics/Mechanic for defeating locks.

Legal = Advocate

Liaison = Diplomat or it can be redefined as one level less in both Admin and Streetwise.

Naval Architect - treat as a new Art specialization, at least until we all see if High Guard addresses this.

Navigation = Astrogation

Prospecting..I'm making this a new specialization under Space Sciences.

Steward becomes split between Art (Cooking), Persuade, and even possibly Social Sciences (Psychology) and Social Sciences (Sophontology).

Survey becomes divided equally Sensors and Space Sciences (Planetology).

That's pretty much it and all the above is IMO, of course. Hopefully, future Mongoose publications will give us more details on character conversion.

Being a long-term MT fan-boy, converting to MoTrav is just a matter of skill-fit. The MegaTrav skills lists are longer, but the total skills earned are about the same.

Forgery -> Art (document forgery), Admin
Liaison -> Admin, Streetwise, Diplomacy*

And then make certain the service skills are all received at level 0 or more.

No level conversion needed, as MT has stat mods as well.

Then add the party package.

I like the stuff for CT -> MGT, thanks...

A buddy of mine and I have started this project... maybe we will submit it for S&P... Great idea!

I am just converting straight, using what ever skill that edition had. Haven't run in to too many problems yet. Note this is limited to CT, MT and T4. For GT and TNE that is a whole other story, mostly work through intent.
