Convention Scenarios

Thunder

Mongoose
Howdy Folks,

I was wondering if anybody had a scenario or two that are really balanced. I will be running some VaS games at a Convention (www.fallcon.com) in a month or so and would really like to show this game off in its best light. I was thinking of something along the lines of:

Scenario #1: North Atlantic
Scenario #2: Pacific
Scenario #3: Mediteranean

The scenarios should not include a lot of ships, ideally 2 or 3 per side. I would like to keep things moving quickly and hopefully the games won't take much longer than an hour each. Does anybody have any ideas?

Note, this message is crossposted on VictoryCommand.com

Hello Thunder!

You haven't said if you intended to run multiple 1 on 1 games on several tabels, or if the scenarios should be designed for multiple players as there's only 1 of you to go around.

My gut reaction is to design a skirmish scenario between competing Light Cruisers and Destroyers to minimize the dice rolling and speed things up.
I'd avoid submarines as their hide & wait until revealed deployment and then slow 1" submerged speed makes them a pretty boring introduction with not much action for a Con game.

So, are you planning on 2 players/game or setting up for 4-6 players at your table?

Oops, all important questions...good thing I asked the experts!

I was planning on a round robin style of games where 6 players rotate through 3 different tables, each table with a different scenario as per my original post.

I am supplying all the miniatures and supplies needed to play the game. I was not going to have players choose their own fleets, each scenario would have pre-built fleets.

Subs and Carriers I was debating avoiding, however they do add some flavour to the game, which is why I was thinking of the three different areas. For example:

Table 1: North Atlantic - Destroyers and a sub or two, maybe a Cruiser.
Table 2: Pacific - cruisers and maybe a carrier.
Table 3: Med - Battle ships

This would allow each type of ship to be played, but in bite sized pieces. I would write up cheat sheets with the rules for the ships specific to each table so folks would not have to learn all the rules at each table.

Thoughts and opinions are most welcome.

Peace

I think to capture the real flavor of the VAS rules you need to include battlerships on 2 of the 3 tables. The small ships just aren't as much fun as rolling bucketfuls of dice IMO.

I would avoid using aircraft as the rules on those are getting some updates and you run the risk of turning off some players to the game if they don't like the current aircraft rules.

Subs on one table might be a good addition though. Also a supply convoy or something.
