Consular Envoy Errata

I know this is more of a retcon than an error, but proles were not intended to be limited to enlisted roles. Nobles are supposed to hold all the POLITICAL leadership roles in Zhodani society and they'll have an edge in education and networking in business and the military. But in the original vision of Zhodani, proles could be military officers, even senior ones.

GURPS got it wrong and the error was carried forward.

I have been bringing this up for years - MgT should go back to the original Alien Module rather than compound errors made by third parties.

Proles can hold any military rank up to general and admiral, they are limited in political positions as you say.

"Any character may be promoted to the highest available ranks regardless of Social Standing, except: Proles and Intendants in Government may not be promoted above rank 3."

The real challenge they face are the very high position rolls (similar to commission) in order to enter the officer or management class, but if they have a high characteristic and get lucky...

I am hoping when Mongoose gets to re-write the Zhodani they change this back to how it was.

One is for the basic character generation, the other is for the advanced.

The best thing to do is ignore the checkpoint lists and look at the charts and tables. It is a well known SNAFU and not exactly out of sorts with similar differences if you check LBB:1 basic characters entry numbers, commission and promotion you will find differences with LBB:4, LBB:5 etc.

If you want consistency Traveller has never been the game to go to.

In this case that isn't so. BOTH of these are from the Advanced character generation section (i.e. the Mercenary/High Guard type characters).

There is a separate table on page 26 that I haven't snipped for the Basic character generation rolls.

Which of these two is correct is pretty important, because in one Proles can successfully enlist in the Consular Guards, whereas in the other it is impossible for a Prole to roll high enough to enlist (even if they have STR 7+).

In Basic Character creation, they can't make the roll because the best you can roll is 13 and you need a 14+. Only with the +2 for PSI 9+ and/or +3 for SOC 10+ is enlistment possible.

The Advanced chargen on pg 32 is different from the Basic Chargen, which is what is used in the pg 34 quick reference chart.

Since the Mercenary/High Guard enlistment versions for Zhos are different from the basic, which is not true of Mercenary/High Guard for standard characters, I would argue that the pg 32 section is wrong.

Yes they are both in the advanced, but one set of numbers is copy and pasted from the basic character generation numbers.

And that is where one set of the numbers come from, they should not have been put in the advanced section, or the advanced numgers that conflict with basic could.should be ignored.

I go with the basic table numbers.

Which brings up my metagame comment on the Zhodani, on the Psi strength to be an intendant. The Zhodani can raise Psi like any characteristic, so if they trained Psi 8 proles up to Psi 9 they have more intendants . Testing for individual talents is also a good idea since a lot of very useful Psi talents are lower than Psi 9.

They probably need to now. If every military and political officer has to be a psion (Intendant or noble), they need a metric f-ton of SOC 10+ people to make society work.

Also, interestingly, if all Intendants and Nobles are automatically given "position" and Proles can't be in the guards, the entire Guards force is officers.
