Conan RPG - Races?

By the listing of languages on the character sheet, I can only imagine that most if not all of them are available.

My question would be what kind of ratios are realistic for a standard Hyborian campaign. It would be weird to see a Cimmerian, Aquilonian, Hyrkanian, Pict, Kushite and Stygian all adventuring together.

That would be down to the Games Master, there's no set 'one Stygian for every two Cimmerian in an Aquillonian campaign' formula. It's more down to the players and games master working together to ensure the feel is right for their game.

Thats why I'm going to start out my game with the characters being the survivers of an army comprised largely of mercenaries. it gives me the freedom to allow just about all the player character classes and races.

Well, yes, but it's also up to the GM what races can be played, even if they're not in the book. I was actually hoping some people might make suggestions on which races they would allow openly, restricted or not at all. For example, if I were to begin a campaign, I wouldn't let the players play a Stygian. That would be mostly for villains or special PCs that maybe come into the campaign later.

Similarly, unless the entire party was Hyrkanian, I'd ask that only one player (if any) be from the east.

Etc. Etc.

In answer to Outlaw's question, the only two races that I would flat out not allow in my game are Cimmerians and Acherons.
IMO, both races have a tendency to stay within their own areas.* For that same reason I would only allow a Pict character if the player can do an excellent, lets say it again, an excellent job of convincing me that the character's background would place him in the rest of the world.

*By his own admission, Conan has stated that he prefered the ways of the Vanir and Asier over the ways of his own people.

I am not that concerned about the races if my players feel up to really portraying a member of a given race. However, as the GM, I have already decided to never, ever place an adventure within Cimmeria. That wooded and dim land of misty hills and crags will remain mysterious and daunting in my campaigns. Likewise, I will likely never take the characters to Khitai for the same reasons. Some places are just best left as dark rumours and sinister asides than as the main focus.

Each and every one of my players have requested(tried to bribe me with drinks)to play a Cimmerian.I think that many of you may experience a similar phenomenon.
That kind of puts me in a position where I may have to set my initial adventures in Cimmeria itself. Its kind of annoying because I too would like to maintain the aura of mystery surrounding Cimmeria and its inhabitants.
Still,as I am of mixed Scottish and Irish background and know exactly what misty hills and dark forbidding woods look like, it shouldnt be too hard to conjure it up a passable version of Cimmeria.
I am thinking at the moment of a north western clan close to the borders of both the Vanir and the Picts.Any thoughts?

Luckily, my group isn't terribly interested in playing Cimmerian Barbarians - They are dying to try out some of the other races and classes.

Still, in regards to your group, I think Cimmerians vs. Picts would be interesting. Cimmerians vs. the Vanir has been done a lot, both in Howard's stories and the comics - but I don't recall seeing Cimmerians vs. the Picts, other than Conan. He does say there is an ancient emnity between the two, which is also held up in the essay, 'The Hyborian Age'.

It would be interesting to see that angle played out, I should think.

I got my group together ahead of the game's publication, using the playtest manuscript, for character creation (or at least an initial start). I gave them 6 levels to play with (I like my games to be higher-powered and have more rounded starting characters).

The characters they came up with were:

a Zamoran thief
a Meadow Shemite borderer
an Æsir barbarian
a Cimmerian barbarian/thief

Probably going to begin with them all in eastern Shem, as escorts for a trade caravan. Will begin in the middle of the action, with an attack by raiders either imminent or having just happened, cutting them off from the rest of their caravan.
