[CONAN] Roll vs Flat base for defenses?

Has anyone tried to substitute a d20 roll for the flat "10" base for parry and dodge? It seems like it would be more engaging that way instead of simply rolling against a flat number.

This is referred to as "Active Defense", and it's mentioned in the 3.5 DMG. Yes, I've been using it in my game. We love it.

Just the regular Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 DMG? Don't recall having seen it back when I DM'd, will have to check around.
