Conan NPC Sheets Test

Based on Vincent's prior work on the NPC charts (which are amazingly useful, but there have been a few concerns raised about needing some fixes, probably due to Vincent's development of the charts on pre-publication materials), I have been working on revised versions. On the following link is the test sheet for a Cimmerian Barbarian:

http://www.yandros.com/RPG/Conan/BarbarianTest.pdf

The form uses much of the same information as Vincent's, with a few notable changes: some columns are rearranged (e.g., ability scores before skills, etc.), there are separate columns for melee and ranged dodge (which will differ to the extent that a shield is being used, which some sheets I develop will include), the type of armor is listed in a notes column, ranged AP includes applicable STR bonus, the 1st level character doesn't have Improved Initiative (if all foes had this at 1st level, it may result in a war of escalation among PCs, who might feel the need to also always have it at 1st level to compete), some hunting bows have STR ratings, some weapon selections are different (dropped Hyrkanian bow for STR rating Hunting Bow, seemed more appropriate for the Cimmerians who are remote from Hyrkania), skills are probably a little differently allocated, etc.

The character is assumed to be using a one-handed melee weapon in two hands and wearing the armor listed, for purposes of the final numbers listed. The numbers are calculated based on including racial modifiers (e.g., Cimmerian ability score modifiers and will save bonus), bonuses for continuous feats (e.g., dodge, improved initiative), armor modifiers to Defense and Skills, and AB, AP, and Dmg factor in the particular weapon listed. Contingent feats such as Point Blank Shot and Fighting-Madness and contingent skill bonuses such as racial bonuses in certain environments are not factored in as they are subject to conditions present in the game. I may include a "bonuses" column below the skills list to show those contingent skill bonuses.

Note, these are not 100% complete characters as a few non-combatant items may be left off, e.g., the Cimmerian has a -2 to Diplomacy checks but that skill isn't included.

Offhand, the only thing this test version appears to lack is the #s for attack bonuses for additional attacks.

I would appreciate any feedback, especially as to whether there are any outright errors, such as things not adding up. Afterward, I intend to continue on, and update the sheets for each class. Further, Vincent originally included a sheet for each favored class for each race from the main book, except for Scholars, and I plan to include each of the ones he included as well as Scholars and a few variants (e.g., maybe a couple of versions of Hyborian Soldier, one with a 2-handed weapon, one with a 1-handed weapon and shield, etc.).

FYI, shortly after I posted it, I noticed my calculation for AP is a bit off and a couple of lines for levels 19-20 were cut off, fixing that, but please let me know if you see anything else.

Looks good. A few things I noticed:

Speed goes up to 40' at level 10 when Fleet-Footed is aquired, but then goes back down to 30' from level 13 and onwards (even though he's still wearing light armour).

The Dodge feat can't be taken at level 1 as it has base dodge bonus +1 as a prerequisite (I personally mostly ignore that prereq in my game, though).

I'd probably have Fighting-Madness as a level 1 feat and not wait with it until level 18, but that's just a matter of taste.

Also, a comment/suggestion: To save a little work, why not just settle for character writeups up to level 10? I see these kind of NPC sheets being far most useful when you need a bunch of mooks during a session. Higher-level characters would, at least in my game, be much more of "special characters" and I'd probably always want to stat them up myself anyways (what I mean is that there would never be such a thing as a generic level 20 character in my game).

Cheers, and keep up the good work! :)

Thanks for the responses, very helpful! I'll make some fixes. Obviously some things like feat choices are going to be personal taste matters, but so will a lot of things like weapon selection, skill selection, etc. so I'm just making what I'm happy with since it is a lot of work!

As for the 10th+ guys, I know what you mean, but there's not much more to do if you are 10th to go ahead and do up to 20th. Besides, I run most everything off the cuff roughly, so having high level stats could come into some use (e.g., unexpectedly the PCs infiltrating the King's tower to rescue someone go in an entirely unexpected direction and encounter the King's personal bodyguard).

I have updated the PDF at the following link:

http://www.yandros.com/RPG/Conan/BarbarianTest2.pdf

I moved the Dodge feat, given prereqs, moved Fighting-Madness to the start (replacing Quick Draw, except for the forthcoming Hyborian Barbarians who can't have it), added Combat Reflexes at the end, fixed the movement rate, fixed Melee AP, and added a line with the terrain bonuses. Any other issues or thoughts?

Looks good, although I have not checked in detail, so there might be more errors (haven't calculated skill points, hp, etc).

One thing, I once got a Rulemaster ruling that you actually add 1,5 Str to AP when wielding a wepon two-handed (link). I don't use that rule myself, and perhaps you don't either, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Heh, I had actually had AP calculating that way in this, but fixed it, because I have not seen a rule in Conan that provides for an AP multiplier, either 1.5 for 2-handed or .5 for off-hand, like you get for a STR damage modifier. So I left it with STR as a straight add, unless I get a Conan ruling to the contrary.

I have one more thing to fix (HP, need to have CON increases retroactively add HP), but then will have barbarians done (9 different races) and on to borderers...
