Ain't It Cool News reported this story of Marcus Nispel being the director of the new Conan movie.

some guy said:
Nispel said he will blend his childhood imaginings of the character with the influence of the famous Conan illustrations by Frank Frazetta, and the influence of such viscerally violent period films as Mel Gibson's "Apocalypto."

I didn't care for Pathfinder or any of the horror movie remakes this guy has done. Hopefully he produces something watchable. :?

I want a Conan movie much better than the previous two titles, which shouldn't be too difficult in my opinion, as I'm not particularily fond of them. However, I don't think it's gonna be that one yet :(

Well, hopefully we can now move on to selecting an actor to play the big Cimmerian. I'm encouraged by the steps moving forward - it has been a long cold wait for a new Conan movie.

I hope they go with someone that's not as big as Arnold was.

Arnold fits the comics and the typical "Conan" look, but, when I read Howard, I don't see someone quite that big.

And, just because he's from the north, they typically show him in a loin cloth and sandals or boots--nothing else except weapons. I never have liked this. Conan wears all sorts of clothes and armor throughout the many stories.

I'm actually impressed with the art in the Del Rey Howard books that are out. They show a muscled, but more realistic, Conan, that acutally wears something across his chest some times.

Someone the size and cut of Gerard Butler or Hugh Jackman would make a fine size for our favorite barbarian. We don't need Arnold II.

Conan the Barbarian has Arnold in chain mail and all sorts of outfits. It was the directors choice to follow the comics in Conan the Destroyer to have Conan be in a fur bottom and boots and nothing else. :?

I do. Must be the age, at which you first saw the movie/read the comics.

It's not because he's from the North, it's cause he's a barbarian and cause he's huge. That way, he simply always stood out from the crowd and viewers turned their attention to him. I believe that was the main motivation for skimpy clothing.

And Hugh Jackman, like in Wolverine - if I were a girl... :D

Pathfinder was a very long movie for me. Some of the scenes were very lovely (places I would like to visit, if they really exist).

But the movie was "bleh". Not necessarily bad, but just average.

I really hope that they'll go along the path of Conan the Barbarian. Seeing cities, villages, people. I had a FEEL of the world of Howard's vision in that movie.

The second one... ...I'll stay polite and say I was slightly dissapointed when compared to the first one. :)

Pathfinder sceniario was #$%@$%, but the setting was very Conanesque, wich actually made the movie watchable for someone like me.

Screenplay was dark and gloomy, combat were fast and furious. I hope the next Conan will look like that (but with a good scenario, and no stupid girl with a bow killing viking).

I never was that fond of any of them but I liked Conan the Destroyer better. That entire snake-cult plot ruined the first one for me. It was simply boring and didn't have time to turn into something serious.

You had a problem with a snake cult...in a Conan movie???

My problems with C:tB were that Conan didn't have black hair or blue eyes and that his entire childhood was changed for no good reason. Other than that it was kick ass screen Sword & Sorcery.

With its realisation, to be precise. Man, I had that weird feeling I was looking at some "Hare Krishna" ceremonies. It didn't have the darkness I would expect from it. Besides, I didn't feel like its followers could convert anyone.

Conan the barbarian was a blast. while it was not exactly like in the novel, a lot of scene were took directly from the novelette

I agree no black hair and blue eye suck big time tough

Conan the destroyer was crap, it really was the muppet show

You know that the movie came first, then the novel, yes? L. Sprague de Camp wrote the book from the screenplay.

I'm not talking about "Conan the barbarian" novel from de Camp, but more about original stories from Howard. While the movie have his own scenario, a lot of scene are in original stories. that what I meant.

Well, you said, "the novel" and "the novellette". Howard wrote short stories, a couple of which, I presume, can be considered a "novellette". One Howard story they call a "novel", but it's quite short when compared to a novel today.

I can see few stories taken from Howard and adapted to the movie. The Thing In The Crypt (getting the Atlantean sword) isn't a Howard story...it's a Carter & de Camp short story--obviously the inspiration for the scene in the movie.

The break-in Conan makes into the tower with the large Snake kinda smells like Howard's The Tower of the Elephant, but other than Conan, in his young thief days, breaking into a tower in Zamora, there's little between the two.

Thulsa Doom, kinda smells like Thoth Amon, but he's a warrior mage, not a strict mage. (Is Thulsa a Stygian? I think so.)

The scene where Conan is crucified is prolly the closest to something Howard wrote--from A Witch Shall Be Born. But, the circumstances around the crucifiction are all changed.

So, really, eventhough I agree that there's a lot in the first Conan movie that "feels" like a Howard story, very little of it was taken from Howard's works.

I saw Conan the Barbarian when it first came out, loved the character but felt the story sucked. It promised much, but the scene in the crypt with the sword, the expectation was there but the bit was, to say the least, dissapointing. Friends who came to Conan via the film thought it was great, but others who had followed the stories via the Howard books, not so.
Personally, I thought 'Destroyer' played more like a Howard story, but it was still dissapointing. I remember at the time thinking 'I hope they don't try to do Elric'.
Cheers.

And Valeria coming back to life (like Belit)

I think the atmoshpere in Conan the barbarian is very Howardesque, but Conan (the character is not) (Brown hair, no blue eye, don't talk a lot, learn advance sword technique in Kithai, ect.)

In the destroyer, everythings just suck

Wow. First time I've ever heard that.

I will admit, though, that Jordan's novelization of that movie is actually pretty good. If you can forget the movie and just read the book as a book, it ain't half bad.

It's not as good as Jordan's other six Conan works (which I think are some of the best pastiches), but it's well worth the read (especially if you've completely forgotten the horrible movie).

Did you ever see the second Hell Boy movie? I thought the villian in that film would make an excellent Elric.
