Conan 2nd edition 1st printing question

MGBM

Mongoose
So I've finally received my shipment with all second edition Conan books released so far. As I opened the core book I noticed it is the first printing, same with Return To The Road Of Kings.

Now I am aware that if the books do degrade Mongoose will send me a replacement free of charge if I present evidence of the degraded book. My question is not about that, however.

A friend of mine also bought the core book and came with the same shipment as mine, so it's also a first printing book as well. However, we are going to give it different uses.

I am going to use the books as my aids during sessions. I don't usually give an intensive use to the books during any session since I know most rules well, however the use of the core book and RttRoK will still be a bit high. My friend only got the book to read it occasionally, from time to time.

My question is, what are the chances of our books getting damaged the way a lot of people here said first printing books get damaged? Will it be a case of when it gets damaged or if it gets damaged? Are there anyone who bought the first printing, gave it regular use and still has the book in fine conditions?

Thanks.

I had some first and some 2nd printing books - the content, incl. the "first printing" text on the first page, is identically. You can see if your book is of good quality if the back of the book is round, not flat. Road of Kings is a softback in his "good quality" edition, as is the player's guide. Don't know if this is common knowledge :)

Ah thanks! The back is slightly round, is this enough?

The original refund/replace policy was for books that were literally falling apart at the seams. Binding was a real issue with 1st and AE, so a little warping...I think you'll just have to tough it out, man. ;)

Ah no, I'm not asking for a refund or anything like that. I only want to know if there's a chance that my books will be falling apart at the seams. :D

I actually prefer not to have to ask for a replacement at all, I rather want to keep this book and want to know if it'll keep in a good shape or if the binding problem will happen no matter what.

I bought one of poorly binded the early copies.
Because people at Mongoose are nice, they sent me a replacement copy.
But of the same printing.
And now there's a new one.
With added material.

Sometimes life sucks... :(

I have to be really thankfull to Mongoose!!
Last year I bought a copy of 1st printing Conan 2e.
Then they sent me another one with better binding (but same content).
Then I was EXTREMELY lucky (and extremely Thankful to Mongoose) because they sent me another copy by error (so I got 3 copies...).
Matt answered me by email that I could keep even that since they are SOOOOOO KIND!!!
Now I noticed that there is a final printing with ADDED MATERIAL!!! (Dagoth Hill adventure??)
I know I had too much from Mongoose (I paid for 1 book and got 3 copies...) but...is it possible to have a pdf version of that added material???
Sorry if the question sounds a bit pretentious and if the answer is "no" I will understand (after all I just had much more than what I paid for...).

Ok, I finally bought the 2nd edition and was worried because it had that 1st printing note in the front. But it does have the Dagoth Hill so that makes me :D !!

I have purchased every book in this line since the beginning of the first edition. When my first printing of the second edition fell apart (and is now in a ring binder), I purchased another from Orcs Nest in London after checking it was a second printing with the staff. It wasn't. I'm even more annoyed to discover that the second printing has an adventure in it.

I have a love-hate relationship with Mongoose. I love stuff about Conan but often hate the way they are producing the material (e.g. crap maps, poor binding, Shadizar map thing ........). It would be good in my view if someone else picked up the licence instead. When is it up for renewal?

Maybe I should complain a bit louder over at conan.com

I'm still willing to give the 'Goose some credit. I also see how RPGs in general and franchises like Conan in particular are niche markets, and there's not an awesome amount of money to be made. So they have to see how they can keep the costs low. They started their in-house printing last year iirc, and I understand that it took a while to remedy the teething troubles. When you try something new, there's always the risk of something going wrong.
Basically I've read a lot of good things about Mongoose customer service, with free replacements and stuff, which of course goes easier for UK or US customers than for continental Europeans. Or concerning the "Shadizar Map Thing", they're sending freshly printed maps for free to anyone who asks for one, how awesome is that?
Granted, there also was the 1st edition, 1st printing issue, where buyers got a deeply flawed core book and were given the opportunity to _buy_ a new one (for less), but considering that Mongoose is a rather smallish publishing company, probably without huge cash reserves, I think it was a fair compromise.

I've seen better-made products, but I've also seen much worse customer service, so I wouldn't say that they don't try to make up for what they messed up. And mess-ups happen everywhere, that's what life is.

So for that matter, I'm happy that there _is_ a Conan RPG and it's not a boatload of suck like the way decipher had slaughtered Lord of the Rings, just to name one example.

I think Mongoose has done fine by Conan. I just assume the lack of maps, the innaccuracy of maps, and the poor quality of maps is a running gag and, more usefully to the company, a way to divert criticism into something with a high visibility but not an overwhelming importance.

More companies should embrace the concept of creating something for people to focus their ire on so that they don't criticize other stuff.

I have no problem with Mongoose for the Conan line. I am a little peeved about the Traveller line but that might be that I have a hard time with patience.

Honestly, I feel that Mongoose has done a superb job with Conan. Both with the game itself and with it's supplements. The problem with maps and such is that every person whom is familiar with REH and Conan has there own view on how his universe should be run.

For example, I have always assumed that Arejun is the city of thieves. This is because I first started out with 12 book series. This is the Conan history I learned (the De'Camp version). Then the first map of the Hyborian Age that I saw was from the Savage Sword of Conan. This tends to bias a person.

I'm with giving Mongoose some leeway with Conan. They really have produced a product that really gives the feel and flavor of the Conan universe. Now I'm hoping they will do the same with Traveller.

I have a question about Spawn of Dagoth Hill. Is it a new adventure or just reprinted stuff from Ruins of Hyboria?
If it is new adventure, it it possible to get it without buying another version of the Second Edition rulebook?
I already have Conan 1st Ed, Atlantean Edition, French Atlantean Edition, Pocket Conan and two versions of the 2nd Ed (as Mongoose let me keep the damaged version). I think I have enough Conan rulebooks and I don't really feel like buying yet another one. I'd rather save my money for other books...
