Command at 5th level

Remember who it was too that got the Warlock, I imagine those favors were because of her "treason" as some officers would see it.

And no ship is "expendable" they all have lots of money tied up in them and crews that you can't grow on trees :)

I know that, but the ship was still expended, even if for a very good reason. We are all expendable for a good enough reason.

I think there are several ships in the EA Factbook that would make good first commands for a fith level Officer:

1) Artemis Zeta (38 crew including players),

2) Tethys Eta or Kappa (27 crew),

3) Hermes Beta (30 crew and 6 starfuries...nice),
or my favorite for this purpose:

4) Myrmidon Alpha (6 crew...just the players and maybee an npc or two)

I have been looking at the books, and now that I think of it command at 5th level is not out of the question.

Think about it, the Minbari are the most advanced race out there with the best trained fleet there is among the younger races, yet a Minbari can qualify for and take the Alyt PrC as early as sixth level, achieving the rank of Alyt-el and command of a support shiplike a Tinashi, Tigara, or Torotha.

Next we can look at the Centauri, who are also more advanced than any of the younger races save the Minbari. By taking the Noble feat at first level, a Centauri Officer (fleet) could perform great service to the Empire and take the Ascension feat at third level, gaining command of a ship of the fleet a a reward.

Therefore if a Minbari can command a ship at 6th level, and a Centauri at 3rd, why nota human at fifth?

A PC can gain command at a level the GM deems appropriate. I mean during the EM war I'm sure we were losing officers much more quickly than they are now.

But remember, even in the modern military, there is a difference between being qualified for command, and there being a command available.

That is so true, and yet I have met a number of officers that shouldn't have command and get it. But at least I have had the privilage of serving with one that diddeserve, and acctually got, command.

And of course there'a all the internal politicking to getaround as well. This would be especially important in the Centauri Navy, but any race will have the same trouble, I mean Jonny "Nuke 'em" Sheridan shot himself a little in the foot when he passed up XO on the Prometheus.
