ComBots - Man-sized Mechs

The best way to start this thread is to ask how many people remember the 1984 SF-Comedy film Ice Pirates ? If you've never seen it, do so immediately, if it's been a while watch it again soon.

It's not too much of a stretch to place the plot-setting of Ice Pirates into a Traveller campaign, minus the space herpes (sorry for the spoiler), the weapons brandished are common enough and the ships pretty much follow the rules concerning such.

What I did take from the film directly into my personal TU was the ComBots, the the one's seen on screen were a bit campy and overly stooge-like but an upgrade to their programs, a few mechanical tweaks and they become a force to be reckoned with.

Such were employed in my campaign setting as a back-up to human security forces in private sector facilities as well as bouncers in more colorful starport bars and casinos. The player characters in my game came into possession of a pair after an aborted hijacking by marauders, said villains making a hasty retreat and leaving such behind.

After considerable expense and effort the two mechanical Brunos found residency with the crew in roles of 'guard dogs' and walking bulkheads-shields that proved useful in several firefights.

Again, take in the film and give the robots their due and see their potential for your campaign.

You've also got examples from West World, THX-1138, Red Planet, and Star Wars. Standard application of the robot design rules (as opposed to the vehicle rules) should give reasonable results.

I'm planning on using robots heavily in our campaign. First as decoys -make some noise while the pirates siphon creds, then as an army of hivers-in-huge-robots, with a robo-hiver mega bot BBEG.

I look forward to unleashing PCs with Man Portable ordinance, maybe even blasting one with a starship....
