Combat Sim v2.2 - PocketPC version

Obsidian

Mongoose
Hi everyone. Version 2.2 of the combat sim is now available (Download now) The big news is the addition of a version that works on the Pocket PC 2003 operating system. It works a little differently then the windows version mostly due to the size limitations of a mobile device's screen, but it should be intuitive enough for people to get the hang of pretty quickly. Development of applications for Mobile devices is a bit of a new area for me so should anyone have troubles with the installation please let me know and I'll do my best to figure out the cause and correct it. I'm also looking for suggestions on the next OS to tackle. Might take on Palm, might not just yet it kind of depends.

The new version isn't all about the Pocket PC release though, I've made some improvements in the windows version as well.

1. The weapon arc drop down now matches the available arcs on the ship. No more seeing anyhing but B or F for you Drazi Players. ;-)

2. Ship destruction rolls added. When the defender gets below 0 damage, the program will now roll to see what happens. Running adrift, Burned out Hulk or Explosion. Tells you the number of AD to roll when ships explode as well.

3. About screen. Added a little about screen so I could get a more recognizable "thank you" out there to the folks who helped me on this project. Especially Tredrick and Silvereye. I'd still be typing up the data if not for you guys.

4. Armegeddon update. All ships sould now have stats consistent with the Armegeddon FAQ.

I'm still working on improving things and the next two big items for me to tackle are variant weapon load outs and reading the data from file. Getting the little grid to do a drop down box with all the different variants has proven rather difficult. Worse, registering when someone has picked a different type seems down right cryptic in the current technology. Sure it can be done, but can't seem to line up all the pieces. The file stuff is something I'll ge to, just need to figure out precisely how I want to get it done. Lot of different ways that can be accomplished...

As always, full source code for the project is provided and anyone out there can feel free to load it up in Visual C# and hack away at the innards. Any questions on what is going on in there, just let me know.

Hey, thought you would like to know, On My Hp RX3715 (a pocket pc 2003 machine) the program installs okay but doesn't do anything when I attempt to run it from either the start menu or directly.

Well that's not good. I mut have accidentally gotten rid of something in the install. Can you do me a favor and go into Remove programs and see if there is a listing for the .Net Compact Framework 2.0? I just looked on mine (Dell Axim X5) and I see that there as well as the Combat Sim. I might have mistakenly removed that part of the install in an effort to get the file size down. Does beg the question of how it got on there in the first place though... Anyway, I'm looking into it and thank you for the report.

Well that's good to hear. I hope you're enjoying it. Still, I need to figure out how to get that put on there as part of the normal install so that others don't have this problem in the future.

Hi, cant instal on my Hp RX3715 !!

Help please

Hmmm I'm starting to think I should include instructions as part of the install. Will do that as part of the Pak'ma'ra update that will be happenning as soon as S&P 41 hits.

Some steps
1. Copy the B5ComabtSim.cab and B5CombatSim.inf files to your PDA.
2. On your PDA, navigate to the B5CombatSim.cab file and click on it.

That should be all, but as Guchi mentioned it is possible that it won't work due to the .Net compact framework 2.0 not being installed. To install this, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...88-59e2-4eba-a70e-4cd851c5fcc4&displaylang=en and download it. I'm planning on making this part of the install, and in fact I thought it was there already but apparently I did something to get it removed. I hope to have that cleared up before the next release.
