Un-FREAKING-believable.
Mr. Quilliams, you are THE MAN!
Needlesstosay, I love it!

Let's hope the text inside can ever live up to the grandeur of the cover art!

Thanks guys! It was kinda strange painting Conan younger but I wanted to make sure there was no mistaking he was a teenager of about 15.

Great cover Chris - as usual! Right up there with some of the best Venarium paintings/drawings. I was wondering if you would go with a landscape view similar to the Atlantean edition cover. Maybe with Conan and some Cimmerians in the foreground. Only because so much is written by Howard about the grey hills/mountains and the gloomy atmosphere. We probably know about the environment than the Cimmerians! I like that you went with the most known event in Cimmeria and Conan's youth. What was your thought process for going with a battle scene at Venarium?

Thanks for your great work, it really makes an impact on the line and enjoyment of the books, IMHO.

Also, I love the Across Thunder River painting - it may be my favorite. Good luck on the auction and congrats to the lucky bastige who wins it!

Great rendition of Venarium!
You've got your place in in the pantheon of the others great Conan cover artists from Frazetta to Norem, Larkin and the like...

Venarium was picked by Mongoose Publishing, it was either one of their editors Nick Robinson's idea or the writer of the book, I'm not actually sure which. I'm sure it was because of the notoriety of the event.

I usually take whatever scene description Mongoose gives me and run with it, coming up with a bunch of thumbnail ideas, just enough quick sketch work for them to get an idea of the compositions and different scenerio ideas that I had in mind. The strongest idea will hopefully get picked and pretty much always does. It was decided best to include the hills in the background, the fort and of course make the Aquilonian design nice and distinct from the Cimmerians. At first I actually had mountains in the background but again it was decided foothills would be more appropriate for the geography of the area and of course I wanted plenty of atmosphere and dust/dirt. Since the Aquilonians were eventually defeated I wanted to give an idea that the tide of the fight was starting to turn, just to add a bit to the narrative. I also wanted to make sure there was enough depth to give some scope to the scene.Sorry for the wait on the reply.

Mr. Quilliams: Is/Was/Would there ever be any poster-sized versions of these great covers ever released? I think that would be an AWESOME concept. *AHEM MONGOOSE!*

I know Mongoose produced a framed print of the Scrolls of Skelos cover from the first edition series of books. At least there's that out there, although I don't know if there are any prints of that still available.

I'd love to make up a batch of economical posters myself but there would be a huge rights issue with Conan Properties unfortunately, I'm not allowed to do that. I imagine it's something most artists would have to deal with when working on most large properties like that. I will be selling certain original Conan covers here and there on ebay in the coming months, but of course I realize those are out of the price range of the average buyer.
