Catacombs of Hyboria as a sequel to Ruins of Hyboria?

The King

Cosmic Mongoose
Catacombs of Hyboria is scheduled for May but there isn't any info about it yet.
Any guess what it can be?

Yeah... if they are not burial chambers, calling it Catacombs... is potentially misleading. I know it can be used to mean a catacomb-like natural system - but I'd fully expect the book to concentrate on burial chambers - that's the prime meaning and what most folk associate with the word I think.

I tend to agree. Mongoose, you should seriously consider renaming your book. Keep in mind that dictionaries order definitions of a word by the most common meaning to the least common:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Catacombs

I assure you that there will be rules for creating tombs, abandoned mines and such...but we are building this book to be a little more well-rounded in order to make caves/caverns as well.

And anyway, "Catacombs of Hyboria" is a WAY cooler title then "Caves of Hyboria".

I hope that the final product outweighs the slight misnomer. :)

What about "Dungeons of the Hyborian Age"?
I know "Dungeons" sound a bit "nostalgic" (and a lot of people here hate the true, olds roots of all rpgs...) but "dungeons" is a cool name and its meaning sounds wider than "catacombs" (at least to a RPG audience!).
I'm an Italian archaeologist interested in Italian Archaeology and I must confess I'm so UPSET hearing the word "catacombs" used for a book including also mines and natural caves ...
And after all.....you are speaking about a Dungeons Compedium for the Hyborian Age!!!
So DUNGEONS OF THE HYBORIAN AGE should be the right title!

I have no words for that bloody "HYBORIA" in your title........PLEASE, STOP IT!!!!!
Last year I though that a couple of last year's good titles ("Players Guide to the Hyborian Age" and "Bestiary of the Hyborian Age") meant a decisive change....but than I saw "Cities of (BLOODY) Hyboria" and now....another "Hyboria" title!!

I can't comment about the use of 'Hyboria' instead of 'Hyborian Age'. So I won't.

But I would say that calling anything "Dungeons of..." in a Conan sourcebook would have the anti D&D and d20 mobs burning their internet torches and sharpening their forum pitchforks in an instant.

As game writers and designers, we can't make everyone happy, unfortunately. No matter how much we'd love to make the perfect product.

Again, I only hope the meat of the book makes up for any teeth gnashing over the title.

Cheers all,
Bry

Humm...? I have no idea? I wonder if this picture is any clue? I wonder what sort of scenarios you could have with catacombs and creatures in a Hyborian setting? It sounds like an interesting premise - to go spelunking in an underground complex, to find all sorts of creatures, hazards, and treasures - someone should make a game of this totally original idea!!! :P

(in all seriousness, I hope they make the art better. Some of the art in Ruins made my eyes hurt! Namely "Glass-Eye Eddy" from page 134)
