Career Jumping

I was curious, do you prefer to generate characters from a single career unless forced out or do you willingly jump career to career?

For fun, I generated a character who jumped (or tried to) jump careers each term. Turned out kind of odd, but fun. Made me wonder if others jumped careers for their characters by choice.

All the time. Sometimes the dice force it but mostly by choice. I prefer the wider skill base it gives a character and I prefer characters to not have +4DMs

I prefer a character that has had more than one career. More interesting backstory.

Never career hopped numerous careers as a forethought but
- I recall a time when I commonly had characters doing a term in the military so that the character gained some melee and gun combat skill before moving on. Easy rank 0 automatic skills.
- Sometimes I might be in a career to gain a specific skill. Maybe there is a specific role/position the character will need to play in the game. I pick a career to get the skill knowing that once I get it at level 2 I'll likely switch careers.

I've had it done as a result of the game mechanics - numerous mishaps.

There are times I switch careers as part of role playing
- A character who fails to qual and get into the career they always dreamed of may go from one career to another until something clicks with them.
- A character that fails promotion, especially if they fail twice in the first two terms, may become disgruntled with their career going nowhere and want to try something different.
- Character wants off their low tech poor world and joins the Imperial military then seeks out other opportunities

I did some rules for changing careers in CT/MT - for example a character could spend one or two terms in the army or navy, go to university and then work as a merchant.

The way I did it was to allow a change of career with a -1 per term after the first on the enlistment roll. Characters going to university for a term negated that DM. I also added some skill options from tertiary education options that didn't provide them - a list of skills that could be selected by the player as skills learned from the education.
