Emperor Mongoose
Devil's advocate here (again), and please excuse my loose, uneducated speculation too:
I think Traveller is swell. I am really looking forward to RuneQuest II. I totally get that both could be used as systems for a modern setting. However, Mongoose, itself, has no official 'modern setting' game system that could stand alongside these two. Neither does it have a 'Horror' setting/system, which for marketing reasons leaves them with room to expand.
Is White Wolf getting tired of tabletop gaming? Who knows, but having seen the video release of their 'Future of White Wolf' I am asking that very question, myself. Note all the enthusiastic addressing of their fanbase, and discussion of technology and formats - but NOTHING about future games. Is there really much more they can do with their flagship title for the last 20 years or so? It's already gone through two previous incarnations, and the NWoD line is looking pretty 'complete' after a 6 year cycle.....
If it were something that I had an input in, which I don't, I would argue that buying the WoD IP would be something that Mongoose could run with very well.....
