Cosmic Mongoose
A Narn player has been pondering some ISA, so today we played a 2 point war (so he could try the carrier) along with 3 Whitestars, he faced an awkward points split of 2 marathons, 3 Chronos and hermes. With no terrain as it was just a taster for him, he set 3 whitestars up in one corner, and the carrier in the other. The crusade EA set up on marathon opposite the carrier, angled to centre, with the hermes behind it, the other MArathon set up in the centere flanked by Chronos, with a sole Chronos filling the gap between. Enjoying initiative, the ISA player asked the EAto move first. but essentially, the three WS@s moved towards the EA right flank, with the 3 Chronos moving to meet them. The hermes also moved forward to bring missiles in range. Alas as it was not a single chronos could fire. The two marathons boresighted the Carrier, one getting in range for secondary weapons. All fighters remained on escort, to far away to engage, and wary of the opposing fighters. The Carrier elected to take on a Marathon, hitting it with it's beam, it managed to inflict a -1 speed crit, and 9 damage and crew, it's secondaries got soaked up by massed interceptors. Seeing the carrier out for the turn, the hermes loosed their standard missiles at the nearest whitestar, and managed an amazing 1 damage and crew after plenty of dodges!. The whitestars begane to hit the Outermost Chronos with beams, again minimal damage scored, 2-2 in total. Now it was time for payback, with the Marathons out of ramge of everything! the Marathons opened up on the Carrier. Some woeful dodging saw several crits inflicted. the Carrier lost it's port arc from a vital crit, then some crew from a crew hit, not to be outdone the pulse aray managed to inflict a 6-6 crit as well, taking the Carrier to borderline cripled. to add insult to injury, the remianing whitestar fire did nothing to the Chronos, then the second marathon took out the forward guns on the Carrier!

Turn 2, the ISA won initiative again. and the Carrier all powered to engines past the Marathons to bring starboard and aft guns into play. the Hermes continiued towards the whitestars as they reloaded missiles. The Whitestars closed in on the Chronos, but underesitmated their speed, and with an APTE all but one Chronos got out of the forward arcs, meanwhile the marathons.. one began turning towards the whitestars, and the other moved forward ass boresighting the Carrier. The fighters moved into a hairball, and it went badly for the ISA. but the fighters remaind tied in combat for another round!. Whitestar fire doot a chronos to skeleton crew, in return the massed fire of the chronos' took on whitestar to cripled and skeletoned, and dented two more, meanwhile marathon beams and pulse cannons cripled and skeletoned the carrier.
At this point, with an almost dead warship, an almost dead whitestar,m and 2 mauld (ish) whitestars, and with the shop closing, we ended, the EA had one skeleton crewed Chronos, and a marathon at -1 speed, everything else was in fine condition. It would have ended up a massacre
Felt a bit harsh on neil, his fleet carrier rolls all failed, and he suffered a lot of nasty crits, I've not put him off thankfully, but he's now very wary of the Chronos for future battles!

That is an interesting points split, took me a minute to make it add up.

I sat with Armageddon on the table trying to figure it out :-)
I "may" have got it wrong, but not stupidly so

Just checked,

I used one Battle two raid (marathon, 2 Chronos)
then Battle, raid, 3 patrol (marathon, 1 Chronos, 3 hermes)
I did get it wrong, as I had 4 patrol points (T-Bolt flight) but they did, in total, 1 point of damage, so not really a big issue!

LOL! I spent while trying to figure out how you split 2 war points into what I thought was:

2 marathon
3 chronos
1 hermes

LOL!

Even more odd thinking when I read hermes salvo against white star and kept thinking 1/1 from 2AD missiles can't merit lots of dodging comment right?

Poor carrier. Facing pair of boresighting marathons...Ugh.

I did feel sorry for neil, he's a Narn player like me, he just fancied a change!

Well first time with everything can be bit hard :D Unless opponent is trying something new as well of course

Also 2 point war was not probably best levels to try it as raid starts to become somewhat less effective at war level.

He also ought to have taken free upgrade to WSC-2 for one of the white stars.

maybe, he's playing Narn in the tourney next week, if we get some free time, I'll see if we can borrow the ISA again and have another quick battle, let him see how horribly effective whitestars can be against unmaneuvreable Narn!

Let us know how it goes :D

But if it's again war then do point out he'll get essentially improved white star if he goes for WS-2 and 2 WS. It's not like their uses are different so even that reason to not split so goes away :D

In high PL games I have found that extra firepower from WS-2 in squadron makes up nice difference. Plus any firepower directed against them is less effective(not to mention heal faster). Actually thanks to that my WS-2's tend to be longest surviving white stars :D Opponents concentrate on easier to kill reqular white stars...

will do, although I will have 3 tourney games to play anyway, so may not have time!

hmm, I got some lucky crits, and his dodges weren't great, but the Marathon is pretty decent, the ability to use beams instead of pulsars is interesting. would have been nice to see this ship have more in common with the warlock though with railguns or missiles
